The Child Within and the Artist at Play
9/4/2011 by NoAngel
The famous child educator Maria Montessori said that play is the work of children and is essential to their self-development. Artists are children at heart, and must also play in order to do their work and to develop as artists. It is through play that the imagination runs free and the artist gathers inspiration for her/his creative work. We know that Adam works incredibly hard, but he also knows how to play. If Adam spent some time at Burning Man this year, it was the perfect opportunity to let his inner child run wild across that vast desert playground. The acts of creation, exhibition, and destruction at Burning Man are important aspects of play, and each feeds the inner child and the artist in different ways.
In creating there is power. The act of building something unique with one's own hands is incredibly empowering, whether it is a tower of blocks or a wooden horse. For Adam, creation goes hand-in-hand with collaboration, and while he is capable of coming up with plenty of ideas of his own (flaming headdress, anyone?) he also loves spinning his ideas around with those of his artistic fellows. Adam is clearly a solo artist, but he has always emphasized the importance of collaboration to his own creativity. In creating there is also celebration of the process, the joy of the journey—of testing the limits of imagination and ingenuity. How high can I build this block tower? How can I take a bunch of fake leaves and make an awesome pair of briefs? At Burning Man, individual ego is secondary to the idea of creativity by and for the community.
Once the creation is complete, the child or the artist steps back and admires what has been created. But the moment is empty unless there are others with whom to share the vision. So the child calls out, "look what I did!" and the artist seeks an audience. Here is where creating for work and creating for play differ. With work, it is expected that the onlooker will judge and critique. The child's teacher might offer suggestions for improvement; the artist's creation is displayed for a paying audience and reviewers, who may or may not like the end result. But with play, there is neither money nor a reputation at stake, and the best audience will observe and praise the effort, feeding the soul of the child/artist and providing much-needed validation.
Finally, inherent in all play is the act of destruction. The block tower gets knocked down. The wooden horse and the statue of the man is burned to the ground. Destruction makes room for the next creation, the next artistic endeavor. There would be no Phoenix without ashes. The destruction of what has been created is like an offering to the muses and a commitment to the future. It is also an act of faith--the child and the artist believes s/he is capable of producing something worthwhile again and again. Just as the child, through play, develops and grows, so does the artist. Leaving one's creation behind is essential to moving forward and beginning the next creative act. Work is generally meant to result in something lasting, whereas play is all about the moment—create, display, and move on without attachment.
Playing at Burning Man a few years ago brought Adam to a revelation and gave him inspiration to work in a whole new way. Adam's success thus far is as much a result of playing in the desert as it is an outcome of his incredibly hard work since then. I hope Adam is playing even as I write this, that he always finds time to play, and that his art is always inspired by the spirit of his inner child.

BURNING MAN TO ADAMTOPIA - - - COME IN, COME IN!!
9.3.11 posted by momtomany
The Trojan Horse Burn last night . . . oh my fucking god!! Didn't happen till after midnight, and we were in the front of the display. Once the fire began, with the flaming arrows, the fireworks, the smoke through the nose of the beast, it became the biggest bonfire of my lifetime. The Playa was surrounded by every cosmic vehicle known to the Universe; skydivers rained down from a night almost devoid of stars; as the lights from this Black Rock City were so bright. Today, the Trojan Horse is still smouldering; and the Playa is littered with bicycles that haven't yet found their owners!
Tonight is the Man. The Burn. The Climactic Moment. Worked 10 hours today, and came back to our little camper at Station 9; and I've escaped to connect for a few minutes with all of you who've followed this adventure - my friends who I love so much. I really do! We're having a little wine, cheese, and dinner in the shade of our vehicles - about a dozen of us - and before long we'll all head on foot to the Playa. We've watched, once again, skydivers fall into our midst as we sit; enjoying the music and the friendships and the ever present stream of Burners that come and go. This is one of the most beautiful evenings I've ever experienced. Crystal clear; warm; no wind. No wind! The desert mountains surround us. They stand in naked elegance, observing the dusty mass that swarms in delight and anticipation of the moment when we collectively affirm self-reliance, creativity, love, commitment, connectedness, humanity. We are broken open.
I'm thinking of my five favorite songs. This must be the hardest thing ever!
This morning, as I dressed for my shift, I listed to BRC Radio. In the middle of words of eloquence I'll never equal, came strains of two songs that were so perfect for this sunrise. 'Somewhere' by Striesand - her etherial, gentle refrain; and my new favorite song - "A World of Your Imagination" remix from Willy Wonka.
I am in that world!
Oh - and I'm still 'on the lookout'! But, if it can be believed and understood by you, the experience of Burning Man has overtaken even my ninja love for a chance to see Adam. I truly believe he is here. I'll have an eye out - believe me. But it's time for my experience to fuel my imagination and my longing for what is to come. And, I know what is to come will have AFL to discover and share.
I'll look to the stars tonight. Please do the same!
