New "Bohemian Rhapsody" trailer pulls back curtain on band's rise to fame blbrd.cm/KLA0DZ
New Official 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Trailer Pulls Back Curtain on Queen's Rise to Fame: Watch
The second trailer for the upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, was released on Tuesday (July 17) and it provides a deeper look at the iconic British band's rise to fame and the unlikely songs that made them one of the biggest rock groups in the world.
Expanding on the first look that fans got in May of the long-in-the-works movie starring Mr. Robot's Rami Malek as iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury, the new 2:30 trailer hints that the film will pull back the curtain on the origin stories of such landmark Queen hits as "We Will Rock You" and the rock opera classic in the movie's title.
The trailer opens with a series of quick-cut glimpses of the group getting ready to hit the stage, zeroing in on Malek-as-Mercury in jeans and a white tank top, preparing to play what would become their career zenith: the unforgettable 1985 set at Wembley Stadium during Live Aid.
It then zooms back in time to Mercury at a piano, playing the instantly recognizable opening piano riff to "Rhapsody," and the moment he first meets guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) -- a scene also depicted in the earlier trailer.
Actress Lucy Boynton is seen fawning over Mercury in the guise of the bisexual singer's longtime partner/muse Mary Austin, while a later scene shows him sharing an intimate moment with a man in the studio as the press hounds the singer about his private life. In another scene, May laments that "nobody will play us on the radio," encouraging the group to get experimental in order to stand out from their peers. That leads to scenes of May playing his guitar with a violin bow and the various studio tricks Queen employed while recording the operatic "Rhapsody," which nearly drives Taylor to violence because of its complicated path to completion.
In another pivotal moment, May tells his bandmates he wants to give their fans a song that they can perform, leading to the recording of the now-familiar stomp-stomp-clap refrain of "We Will Rock You." The clip crashes to a close with a series of scenes depicting the tensions as the group rises to world domination, and, in a possible allusion to Mercury's AIDS diagnosis, finds the singer burning the candle at both ends amid fears he might be running out of time.
It all adds up to what looks to be a thrilling trip through the band's rocket ride to stardom. "Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid," reads a description from studio 20th Century Fox. "While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music." Bohemian Rhapsody is due out on Nov. 2.
