HAPPY BIRTHDAY NATTYGIRL (and I'm sure I've missed a lot) CAN"T WAIT FOR TONIGHT. I'm SO EXCITED BTW I don't like Joshua, He''s so dramatic and overkill. My favorite is Anya and 2nd place goes to Oliver. Hee...I love Joshua. I don't like Anya - she is sooooo pageant-girl fakey and did you see Olivier last week? He almost got hysterical last week because his model had boobs and he didn't know how to design for them. He complained the whole time about boobs. So funny. But we must remember that selective/slanted editing is everything in these reality shows.

How about the one husband who described his wife as BOOBS, big BOOBS, well I thought she would be a DOlly Parton clone but no, It was funny and again, just when you think it's a disaster, somehow, they pull it out and there are some very likeable designs.

So sad. News story this morning about another bullied teen committing suicide. One of the founders of It Gets Better talking about how home schooling could be an immediate solution and that home schooling isn't just for fundamentalist Christians. ETA He, also, talked about changing schools or getting a GED and maybe more that I missed because I was thinking about the home-schooling idea. Problem with GED is that the better colleges don't accept GED they want actual graduation or at least used to and also a lot of the things necessary for a well rounded college prep and application to the better colleges and universities are things that you have to be going to an actual high school to get. Pulling out into home schooling while l looking for other options is at least something to be considered. Not quite true. Once there was a time when a GED/Home Schooling was a real challenge to overcome on a college application. You had to offset it with proof of outside activities, a special talent-based reason (Olympic athlete, professional actor/musician, etc.) and/or a really high SAT score. But that has changed. With the dramatic growth in home schooling and virtual high school program, you can even get into Harvard with a GED. What you need is a compelling story why this was the route you took and you need to have the academic credentials and you need to prove that you have some extreme talent. (Not that different than someone who went to a "real" high school. If you have a massive SAT score and extreme talent, you do not even need to graduate from high school. I am not saying it is an easy route, but I know a high school drop out (drug addition/abuse issues) who completed his GED and was just accepted at an Ivy League School. He deserves this shot because he is brilliant and worked extremely hard to build his academic and activity credentials. But he did it. ETA: I can't wait to see Adam tonight!! Seems like it has been forever since he was on TV for any length of time.

It's my impression that home schoolers do pretty well on SATs. Extra-curricular activities and community service may or may not be still connected to a particular HS. Anyway, I think the point is that it's a viable option in a life or death situation. The hard part is for the adults involved to realize that that's what they're dealing with.

One last comment on the GED -- even if a student has a GED and low test scores and lack activities, they have a route to get into a major university. In ever US state they can attend community college or an open enrollment university for a year or two and then apply for transfer.
I did some online research and determined that at least as early as 1988, every major College and University in the US had a process for admission for candidates with a GED. So this is not new.
ETA: Sorry to be OT but wanted to clarify and I thought it was a much higher hurdle until I looked.

I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful thoughts for my Grandmother yesterday. We had great news this morning - she is feeling MUCH better and is even sitting up in her chair. It amazes me that a 103yo woman can still fight back from illness. When my father got there yesterday morning, she was in bad enough shape that he (and the caregivers at her home) thought it would only be a matter of hours, but she rallyed throughout the day, had a good night's rest and is vastly improved this morning.
