The past week was packed with news and fun for Adam fans. But the highlight for me was it seemed like Adam Lambert Fashion Week.

Adam kicked off the week working in a Miami recording studio – whatever. Then Adam did a bit of shopping at the Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour before attending the Ocean Drive Magazine Fashion Show. [Possibly the best place to shop in Miami.]

On Thursday, in Part One of his ET Interview Adam said he was going to stop talking about the album…and mentioned that he made a deal with his label to be Executive Producer of his album. Whatever, who cares. But then [thankfully] he talked about what fashion means to him.

Then Adam finally got back to fashion.

So, @adamlambert, u HAVE to hear this awesome story my friend told me today: Her 5yo son has been asking tons of questions lately about God, heaven and boy/girl body parts. After a recent discussion about how girls and boys were "made" with different "parts", he wanted to know who was made first, girls or boys? My friend answered, "The bible says God made Adam first." Her son looks quizzical and asks, "Adam Lambert?" :D ;D :D

Show a Little Pride. Or Not.

Many times over the last few months Adam has expressed pride in his forthcoming second album. Most recently in the Insider.com interview he said—"I think it's gonna be damn good, if I do say so myself." He went on to say that he is considered the Executive Producer of the album and has creative control—"involved with the imaging, the production, the writing…." Of course, Adam fans were delighted, while some non-fans expressed dismay at his "ego." This meme is not new and the Adam-as-arrogant concept has been around since he first appeared on Idol. Haters gonna hate, of course, but the fact is that even many Adam fans point to "humbleness" as a quality they admire, and cringe a bit when Adam seems to overstep. The idea of pride/ego as negative and humility/humbleness as positive is fairly universal, but when it comes to an artist, it's a bit more complex than black and white.

Long before the inclusion of Pride as one of the Seven Deadly Sins there was the Greek idea of hubris, and the gods were quick to punish humans who dared to challenge the immortals' superiority in all things. Fast-forward to the Idol bubble, and it sometimes seems that being humble is more important even than singing talent, with viewers quick to tear down a contestant who is seen as "cocky." Adam was unfailingly gracious on the show but criticism of his ego started early on. The fact that Adam spoke of his Idol journey in terms of strategy made detractors rage even more. Somehow taking creative control equated to lack of proper humility.

I believe that many people confuse confidence with arrogance and fail to see how essential it is for an artist, particularly one who is an entertainer, to have a strong sense of confidence. When Adam says that his album is going to be "damn good," he is showing us that he is proud of what he is doing and is confident in his future product. He is also smartly building excitement and anticipation for what is coming. Why should fans get excited about something if the artist isn't excited about it? Aw-shucks humbleness may appeal to Idol voters, but it rarely translates to an avid fanbase or to strong music sales. I find it odd when people complain about an artist's ego and express a desire for her/him to be taken down a peg. Beyond creating, an artist/entertainer's job is to sell the product. I want an artist to tell me that what s/he's got is so fantastic that I absolutely must have a look.

When people talk about someone with a big ego, they usually mean that the person is narcissistic and self-absorbed. This is not Adam. Adam has a healthy ego—he is confident in his abilities but also realizes his limitations. He believes in himself but doesn't think he can do it all alone. He is courageous but not foolhardy. He has excellent insight into both his strengths and weaknesses. He is willing to listen to criticism and filter out what is valuable, and he recognizes that he still has much to learn.

Adam tweeted that "being a 'rock star' is more about an approach and state of mind." I think that for him, part of that "rock star" attitude is a sense of confidence which translates into the courage to try new things and to constantly take risks. These days when we see Adam, he seems to be brimming with confidence. Whether it is the result of pride in his artistic endeavors, or being in creative control, or the joy of loving and being loved, or (most likely) all of the above, it is a delight to behold.

Adam's confidence makes me confident in what is coming next!

I am puzzled when confidence is criticized. If I have worked very hard at something, devoted my energy, time and passion to become the best that I can be at it, should I not be confident in my ability? If I really think that I am not good at something after all that hard work, then, I should focus on doing something else that I can become good at.

Studies have shown that a person has to reach a certain level of competence before they can judge their own competence or the competence of others. This is particularly true in areas where there is not an objective, quantitative measure of success. (like how many strikeouts one pitches, or the speed one's fast ball is clocked,) Areas like language, art, and even in one study, telling a joke. Those individuals with the least amount of competence in an area of knowledge often judge themselves to be much better than they are. Perhaps that is where arrogance comes from? Those who test in the highest levels of competence, if anything, underestimate their competence in comparison to others. They can recognize when others are doing well, and don't elevate themselves above other achievers.

Adam has a very high level of competence in singing and performing. That allows him to recognize others who perform well without having to compare himself to them. It also allows him to seek out and learn from competent others, to expand his own skill set. He has confidence in his abilities based on his competence, and on years of experience and feedback.

It is therefore, entirely possible that those who know little or nothing about voice production, the music industry, and the art of performing aren't competent to recognize Adam's competence. They may lack the competence to recognize how very good Adam is. Therefore, his confidence may come off as arrogance, particularly on a show like American Idol.

Yes, Adam is confident. He should be. If he wasn't confident in his ability after all the hard work he has invested in it, he would be a fool. And, we know our BB is no fool. I have never seen any sign of arrogance in Adam. He displays no signs of entitlement, no disdain for others, no cockiness. Isn't that one of the reasons we love him so?

I was just able to watch my Glamn Nation Tour DVD all the way through with no one else in the house for the FIRST TIME.

It was sooo good for a first album and first tour. Unbelievable. I haven't listened to all the songs on FYE for a while now and I loved hearing them again. I'm all verklempt and emotional.

I also watched the Behind the Music show again. It ended with AFL saying: "I'm not TRYING to be anything." I'm just being ME.
I really think that's true. He doesn't compromise. Confidence, yes AND BALLS OF STEEL. ILHSFM

P.S. My son usually goes to the Hollywood Cemetery Movie Nights but skipped tonight, the last one of the summer. It was ET. His friends just texted him that the film was introduced, in person, by Drew Barrymore!!!! They had to rub it in. He went to a bunch this year. I swear, I'm going to at least one show next year. It's becoming iconic.

Because I agree, I honestly cannot understand how didn't anyone of these voters could see what the rest of us saw. As lynne pointed out yesterday, his humbleness on the show was one of the FIRST things I saw from the very beginning. If he was arrogant I would still love his voice but I wouldn't be an avid fan.

Adam's confidence makes me confident in what is coming next!

NoAngel I love your essay today. One of the things I like about Adam is He's not afraid to show His fans all the different sides of His personality.

Hey guys, I have been lurking here since last month and thought id finally join~ I first learnt of Adams existence in June this year when it seemed that he came on the radio almost everyday (ZM- I live in New Zealand). I really liked whataya want from me and for your entertainment. One day I looked up FYE on youtube and was totally taken aback by how good looking and sexy he was! And then came the hours and hours of watching his AI performances and ever so articulate interviews, and I was totally hooked and here I am now. lol
