Adam the Artist: Appreciating Other Artists
10.1.11 by juniemoon
The painter must enclose himself within his work; he must respond not with words but with paintings. – Paul Cezanne
Adam with his Zodiac Club compadres
Today I want to write about how Adam’s appreciation of other artists factors into his creative identity.
Our society has a deeply ingrained belief that being an artist is not a “real job.” Not long ago, I was talking with a friend who asked me how my own creative writing was going. We had some light conversation about it, then she mentioned that her teenage daughter was drawn to creative writing. Before I could reply in an encouraging fashion, she said, “I’m not going to let her pursue it, though. I want her to make money.”
One of the first steps towards becoming an artist is to find a way to reject the belief that art is of no real use. Though it may not be highly valued by the marketplace, art is vitally important to the everyday lives of most human beings. What if we did not have music? What if there were no novels, no poetry, no movies, no plays, no TV shows? What if every wall was bare of paintings, drawings, and photographs? What if we trudged back and forth through our public spaces with no parks or gardens or sculptures to look at? What if we were forbidden to wear jewelry? Wouldn’t it be an awful lot like being in prison?
People like my friend often make it a point to make artists feeling guilty about their creative passions. Once, I remember a co-worker noticed that I was going to be out on vacation and asked me if I was going on a trip. When I indicated that my trip was to visit some places that had to do with my creative writing, she scoffed and said, “Get a life!” People often direct resentment at artists, even successful ones like Adam, as if they are somehow breaking the rules, unfairly claiming privilege or good fortune for themselves simply by choosing to do what they like instead following the well-trodden path.
Even those who appreciate music or other arts cling to the myth that there is something mystical or savant-like among artists. For some reason, many people seem to think that the idea that an artist must train very hard to develop their knowledge, experience, and abilities takes the “romance” out of the whole thing.
Like many artists before him, Adam overcame these kinds of beliefs by seeking out people who understand what being an artist is all about. Adam’s long-time friends include people like Lee Cherry (photographer and director of the Zodiac Show), Scarlett Cherry (avant-garde singer and performer), Alisan Porter (performer and composer), Cassidy Haley (clothing designer and singer-songwriter), Hans Haveron (fine artist and film maker), Carmit Bachar (recording artist and co-founder of the Zodiac Show), and a number of others who together formed their own artist’s circle. These multi-faceted individuals support each other by embracing art a legitimate activity, taking each other seriously, respecting each other’s work, and helping each other. I love how Adam continues to maintain and nurture these friendships rather than embrace the Hollywood lifestyle.
Adam and Sauli with friends at the 2011 Burning Man festival
Adam also extends himself far beyond his artists’ circle of friends and goes out of his way to feed his artist’s soul. He reads. He goes to museums. He attends concerts and theater, everything from mainstream events like a Prince concert or the Spiderman premiere to offbeat circuses and avant-garde theater. He even attends Burning Man, perhaps the ultimate endurance test for radical self-expression in the world. Adam takes the time whenever he can to fill his eyes with pictures, his ears with music, his heart with light, his soul with experiences, and his head with fantastic and often challenging ideas.
Adam is also deeply interested in his own art form, pop music. I was so struck a few weeks back when Adam Levine of Maroon 5 put his foot in his mouth by not having heard of “Whataya Want from Me.” I understood from others who watched Levine on The Voice that it was far from the first time he professed ignorance of current tunes. It seemed so strange to me that Levine had so little interest in his own professional arena.
Adam Lambert, by contrast, does a lot of boosting of other recording artists. Some of this is just good business, making connections with artists he enjoys and whose fan bases he wishes to cultivate. I usually check out the artists Adam recommends this way, and I don’t think I’m alone in sometimes feeling baffled about what Adam sees (or hears) in some of them. But as I prepared this blog, I realized that I was looking at it all wrong.
Art is an act of the soul, and criticism is an act of the intellect. Adam has embraced the life of an artist, not a critic. A critic worries about what is good or bad. A critic takes sides. As an artist, Adam’s job is to reflect on his own work, and figure out how to progress, evolve, and move forward. He needs to be able to say, “If I were to record FYE again I would do things differently … I intend to change that.” It is not his job to worry about what other artists need to do to improve or what they might do differently. I suspect Adam tweets links to these artists because he genuinely enjoys the beat, the dancing, the singing, or perhaps simply the chutzpah of the work. Adam is striving to be one of those people who nurtures the creative impulse, not one who deadens it.
Adam knows that putting one’s heart and soul before the public is a rough business. He has acquired the skills and thick skin to be able to handle the comments people make about his work. From what Adam said in his interview last week with Entertainment Tonight, he has started to learn that labeling his own work or talking too much about it takes away the mystery that others may perceive in his work. As fans, we are hungry for every detail, but the truth is that Adam’s music, like any work of art, will be out there for all of us to discover and interpret and embrace in different ways. By living fully as an artist among other artists, Adam has already claimed freedom for himself. Now, he is learning to grant that freedom to his audience as well.

Written by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on September 30, 2011.
"It has been all over the place that American Idol star Adam Lambert will be a mentor on The Hub’s show Major & Minors. He has not shown up just yet, but the show which will be about the raw talent of some very young potential stars will have him at some point in the near future. Some stills from the show that he taped have been released via Hollywood Reporter, though."

Hub's 'Majors & Minors' Notable For What It's Not
By: Brian Lowry
Published: Fri, September 30, 2011, 1:53 PM
"A singing/music series featuring 12 performers age 11 to 16, the show notes at the outset that there's no competition, no voting kids off. Yes, one of them will be rewarded with an RCA recording deal, but the rest hang around for the duration, having their skills honed while dealing with artists like Jennifer Hudson, will.i.am, Adam Lambert and Avril Lavigne."
On the Friday 9.30.11 M&M, there was no Adam and next week’s episode features Leona Lewis.

Adam Lambert Wonders When We All Can Forgive John Galliano And 'Move On'
Posted 9.30.11 by Chrissy Mahlmeister in Dudes
In case you haven't heard, former creative director of Christian Dior John Galliano was recently found guilty for spouting off anti-Semitic remarks at a Parisian cafe earlier this year, which resulted in a firing from Dior and his own label. But even despite Galliano's comments, he still has some celeb supporters—one of them being ex-American Idol contestant Adam Lambert (who happens to be Jewish). Adam tweeted about Galliano on Rosh Hashanah, saying, "Galliano: BRILLIANT designer screwed up and said offensive things. When can we forgive him and move on? LOVE his clothes. And I'm a born Jew!" One of Adam's followers replied, "So making gorgeous clothes makes it okay for him to be an a******? I don't get it." Adam responded, saying, "Not at all...But just cuz he's (was) an a******, that means I can't wear his gorgeous clothes? #policalcorrectnessquestions." It looks like Adam won't stop sporting Dior clothes despite Galliano's remarks, but the question is—would you? Tell us in the comments!
