Where are our happy tears? I really believe Adam when he said Freddie's spirit was up there with them on stage. I know I could hardly breathe...there was a beautiful energy up on that stage. I think Freddie would have been honored, too! YES!!! ITA. Also what's incredibly poignant is the story behind the song and I don't think anyone would argue for a minute that May, Taylor and Adam chose it randomly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Show_Must_Go_On_%28Queen_song%29Recap for anyone who missed it amid the flail of last couple of days: "The Show Must Go On" is a song by English rock band Queen, featured as the twelfth and final track on their 1991 album Innuendo. It is credited to Queen, but written primarily by Brian May. The song chronicles the effort of Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life.[1] Mercury was so ill and could barely walk when the band recorded the song in 1990, that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it.[2] Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "he went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal".[2]
It was released as a single in the United Kingdom on 14 October 1991 in promotion for the Greatest Hits II album, just six weeks before Mercury died. Following Mercury's death in November 1991, the song re-entered the British charts and spent as many weeks in the top 75 (five) as it did upon its original release, initially reaching a peak of 16. A live version with Elton John on vocals appeared on Queen's Greatest Hits III album. (Read more) The very point of Brian May writing the song for Freddie, it being one of the last he ever recorded and the last song on the last album released with Freddie, is clear in its message. The parallels of confronting the end of ones life like the curtain coming down on a performance. The cast may change, but life (the show) marches on. Brian, Roger and Adam paid a beautiful homage to Freddie and that song – which he never performed live – last night. And having it be from a young "disciple" of Freddie's, who shares a lot of similar struggles, it really is a profound analogy; too bad so many people who loved Freddie can't see that. Well, you certainly have a way to get me out of lurkdom; even if it's only been a day! Nothing new to say! I read posts like the ones above from Adamrocks and Susie - so many of you have reiterated my sentiments exactly. I wish I had eloquent, new thoughts to add, but my brain is filled with performance. I just keep living it, in my mind, over and over. His shadowy presence; the heartbreaking beginning of 'The Show Must Go On' and the way he swayed - strutting to 'We Will Rock You'; then teasing Brian down the catwalk for 'We Are the Champions' - - - over and over I'm amazed and spent. I forget to breathe! I'm coming around. Busy picking up the pieces of me that blew apart in the nuclear fusion of Queen and my Rock God.
