Some other Russian articles about Adam: bit.ly/mGXBD0 (google translated from tumen.kp.ru/daily/25693/896710/ original Adam sections: "Adam Lambert in the background of all other participants looked delicate violet (muddle rock-fest with a gay parade that took place at the same time in the capital), but, surprisingly, gave quite a high quality set. It can be seen in this their "Idol" actually produce suitable for consumption, rather than "semi". It was amusing to observe how the real rocker in the stifling heat of the skin, which came, apparently to Korn, and their brutal companions to dance to the beat and sing along effeminate Lambert, clapping smartly painted eyes." So yes, homophobic reporting, but also acknowledging he sounded great and won over the heavy metal audience dudes ETA: It would be great to have a real translation of this. ____________________ Another w/ google translate: bit.ly/k4TjCm(original www.mk.ru/culture/article/2011/05/29/593097-zemfira-zapela-po-maksimumu.html)"American Adam Lambert looked like a swallow with a gay pride parade. Charismatic winner of the show American Idol (the prototype of our "People's Artist") has made a career, openly declaring their homosexuality. On stage, "Maksidroma" he gave a rather long set (with a cover, for example, "20 Century Boy" by T-Rex), the most striking number of which became his most famous song "If I Had You"." This also says that there were 52,000 attendees. Reading the originals made me sick, so I am not translating this fucking crap - the Google version is quite accurate despite horrible English - the idea of the coverage is expressed perfectly for both articles...* The reason it makes no sense to you is that the articles make no sense what so ever. All I can add is that the first one is on the site of a (possibly) major newspaper - need someone living in Russia to confirm... The good news is that the responses in the comments are extremely complementary towards Adam and hugely critical of the author. the 52K attendees were there throughout the day, not at any one performance. I saw somewhere that the largest crowd was at the last set - I can't remember whether it was Korn or The Prodigy. It seems that homophobia in Russia is not only widely spread but it is also totally accepted and perpetuated by the media. It is a real shame... *we have at least three other Russian speaking members that I know of - please feel free to translate, folks.

Nica, I appreciate you taking a look at them briefly, and yes, the casual and widespread stereotypes can be somewhat ill-making, so of course don't feel obligated to translate. I'm kind of one of those "give me the news, good or bad" people, and if anything these articles are a record of press coverage of Adam's first visit to Russia and maybe something that can be used as a benchmark for later concerts there, and hopefully changing attitudes over time. I've also yet to read anything derisive about his music, just his appearance (they are really hung up on the eye makeup and nail polish), and of course they are often mentioning his sexuality. I can't interpret tone or whether something is joking versus mean-spirited from google translate, but that's OK, one can still get the gist of the articles from google. Some others for folks interested: ___________________________________ www.aif.ru/culture/article/43397 original bit.ly/kIam7i google translated "Number of people, by the way, off scale. Phenomenon preslipodobnogo American Adam Lambert to the Russian people was held for the first time. And it seems that he did not regret - a special unit of adoring fans with purple balloons and squealed with delight. Balloons were released into the sky at the end of the first song, and in the hands of girls "case" pink paper heart with the written frivolity like this - they say, fine, Adam has an impressive dignity and take me ... The homophobic slant of the articles doesn't bother me that much. I mean in a town where they won't give a gay pride parade permit it's not surprising. The important thing is that he shatters expectations and both vocally and personally is stellar. I've been looking up more background on gay russia and the pride parades. I think I might have been among the worried nellies if I had done so before the concert. They have been trying to hold a gay pride parade on the 27th May in Moscow since 2006 without success. The date is the anniversary of the date in 1993, when President Boris Yeltsin signed a decree which repealed the law forbidding male homosexuality. And even homegrown acts such as Russian singer/dancer Boris Moiseev, has had his concerts incur the wrath of church leaders and politicians claiming the “family agenda”. Madona didn't make it to Russia until 2006...."A few days before, posters with Madonna were burnt in the streets of Moscow. The Church was considering damning those who will come to the concert." So I've deduced that it wasn't at all surprising that Adam's team asked for more security and that he didn't tweet until after the concert, especially when they found out it was on the same day as the yearly gay pride event which so far has always ended with at least some members of the gay group arrested. And to get thru all that without a hint of any protest at Adam's concert was darn good. Of course anyone trying to start anything against an army of women armed with purple balloons and big red hearts would have been asking for it as the radio djs have hopefully learned too. Nope, I think the publicity is a win. You've got the article I posted up earlier calling him a hero of the charts and then this one saying even the leather wearing real rockers who came for Korn/Prodigy were impressed with the high quality. Thanks rabbitrabbit for finding even more. I'll link to some of the background sites I was researching. Nothing about Adam in these. On Monday 30th May 2011, elliegf said: OK, guys, here is some Russian press on @adamlambert at the Maxidrom! The second paragraph is about our guy, translation: 'The only dark horse in the line-up was Adam Lambert, who has suddenly managed to shake up not only his own fans (girls of about three hundred), but also indifferent to the product of conditional MTV fans of The Prodigy. The reason for it is that from the speakers unexpectedly sounded not what you expect from openly gay and graduate «American Idol», a stereotype, but very convincing glam-pop-rock - something between Roxette and Guns'n'Roses. Well, or between a party for those who survived the 90's, and gay disco' The source: www.gazeta.ru/culture/2011/05/30/a_3632789.shtml

And it seems that he did not regret - a special contingent of adoring fans with purple balloons squealed with delight. Balloons were released into the sky at the end of the first song, and in the hands of girls "happened to be" pink paper hearts with the written frivolity like: Adam possess impressive assets and take me ... Hits «If I hade you» and «Whataya want from me» caused madness. Meanwhile Adam with painted eyes, glamorous manicures and all the rest (what's common among singers [to please] girls) continued to perform his dance of lonely dragonfly during the mating period. The second one - Adam mention: www.interfax.ru/culture/txt.asp?id=192127 (original) Thus, the second guest of the festival was a Briton, Adam Lambert, who mainly delighted the female half at Tushino. Love poems plus great vocals as well = the sea of heart-rending screaming female voices." The third one - this is a somewhat rephrased first article... www.vmdaily.ru/article/119404.html (original) "The appearance of the American Adam Lambert, copying Elvis Presley, was loved by many. Admiring girls released purple balloons into the sky , they were shaking paper hearts and were squealing with delight. Painted Adam posing as handsome idol, sang hits If I had you and Whataya want from me - and was gone. " I want to add that the general tone towards Adam AND the female fans is condescending and sarcastic. These are "hard rock" admiring reviewers, so no surprise there. It is obvious that none of them attended Adam's set. They also say that 30K were in attendance overall and not 52K as mentioned in the yesterday's article... rabbitrabbit - you are absolutely correct - nothing about his music or his voice... interestingly enough - Zemfira, whom almost all praise and proclaim to be a world-wide superstar, is a lesbian - so they have no problem with that at all...

Rabbitrabbit and NICA, thanks for the translations. I do like to know what was written/said, even if it is not complementary and is bigoted. I think it is also good to remember that many of the U.S. reviews and interviews from 1+ year centered on GAY. People seemed fascinated with that for a long time. Now it is old news. And I should not just limit my comment to the U.S. Even though there appears to be more tolerance in some other countries (U.K., Australia), GAY still seemed to be the main topic of conversation in his interviews last year.
