I'm surprised that Neil didn't insist on wearing a yarmulke. Now THAT would have made a fine holiday class photo!

Re the Jessie Ware podcast, it's funny, I've noticed in American TV shows that Americans first cut their food to several bite-size pieces, then put the knife down and move the fork to their right hand in order to eat these pre-cut bits. It's intersting comparing eating manners. And Brits stack the food the back of their forks, I mean the convex side instead of the concave side, which needs a lot of skill if you ask me...

Love Adam's Spread A Smile song! His voice is as perfect from a room at home as it is on a huge concert stage.
Interesting that some artists are demanding that political candidates get permission before using their music. Makes sense to me.
And the idea of social media requiring that everyone use their real name sounds good, but I don't think it will every happen. I think there would be many people inventing fake names and accounts anyway. Sad, but very likely.

I'm rewatching season 8 of American idol. Im on top 5. Just dawned on me. How close we were to QAL never happening. As you recall. Adam was in the bottom 2 that week. If he was eliminated. QAL never happens. Spike the keyboardist. Was saying he discovered Adam on idol when he sang whole Lotta love. Would of never happened if he was eliminated. I don't believe that Adam was ever in the bottom 2. I remember following a site called Zaba search who did Idol predictions at the time. If I recall correctly, they were pretty accurate. Anyway, I remember them putting out a statement that according to their stats, they didn't believe Adam was in the bottom 2. I remember reading comments on there and 99% of them were flailing over Adam. It's like he was a rock star. I also do believe in "text gate" despite AI coming back and saying everything was fair. I don't think a state of less than 3 million in 2009 could generate 38 million votes unless there was power texting.

My mother was a British war bride and she taught us at a very early age, the PROPER way to use utensils, and we ate the 'formal' way always...every meal. She used to say that if you always eat the 'right' way [read that as the European way] then when you are an adult and go to a formal occasion, knowing which utensil to use, when, and how will not be a problem or lend any pressure to the occasion. Here in Canada, I would venture that more people eat using both hands than not....but I always have to avert my eyes from the 'cut it all up and then use one hand' tactic...it is so ingrained in my sensibilities. I def. think Adam has the wrong idea about crossing utensils...that has always been a signal that you are not done yet, to the best of my knowledge. If it is being used the opposite, then that is just some sort of claiming difference for the sake of it....it would seem to me. Am I wrong? Why would you take the exact gesture and flip the meaning.... At any rate....great interview/podcast and a fun way to wake up. Thanks for bring it over.

Here too, crossing utensils means you're not done, and placing them side by side means you're done. Look what I found:

I can honestly say that my (right-handed) parents never held a fork in their right hand their whole lives; never held a fork without a knife and always ate off the back of the fork. Even peas! They put their knife and fork on the plate between every mouthful - crossed to show they weren’t finished. My mother loved Adam; wished all men wore a little makeup and was intrigued by his ‘laced up trousers’ - did they really unlace? And my father knew for sure I was the only person in the world mad enough to see a concert twice. (Little did he know about the other 50 or so.... ) (Just made myself miss them.... )

I remember thinking it was very odd at the time; there seemed to be no forewarning. Have to say though that Feeling Good was my least favourite Adam performance so I put it down to enough others feeling the same. Don’t know - but perhaps it was tactical when results were becoming a little predictable - to bring some suspense and tension back into the results show. I think there were enough voting questions raised in the final to allow some thought about Adam’s ‘bottom 2’ night in retrospect.

Idk why, but I do know that there are differences in many areas as compared to most EU “ways” (idk re other continents): Celsius vs Fahrenheit Metric vs yards/ feet - whatever this nonsensical system is called Kg/g vs Lb/oz - another tots nonsensical scale decimal coma/point meaning the opposite date expression order day/month/year vs month/day/year long división written in the opposite direction these are just a few that come to mind immediately. re table etiquette- I am not sure it even exists in the US, it seems everyone does whatever they want. I remember having to teach my American born and raised future husband to eat “properly” before introducing him to my mom. The “horror” of her seeing the “cut the food first, switch the fork between hands” could’ve been a huge setback
