I grew up on the shore of Lake Michigan. I know how wild the waters can get. My brother crewed on one of the ore boats like the Fitzgerald for a couple of years. Boring drudge work in good weather, grueling dangerous work during storms. This song really hit home and is my favorite Lightfoot song. Yes, I think it does have a lot more meaning for those who have spent time by the Great Lakes. I spent my summers on the shores of Lake Huron. My uncle was the captain of an Imperial Oil tanker for many years. He regretted that he wasn't allowed to volunteer for WW2 service because his job was considered too important for the war effort.
