This is for those folks here who are really into trained singing and musical theater. The rest can scroll.
Remember back when the movie of Les Misérables came out and Adam tweeted criticism of it because of the poor singing? He roundly got raked over the coals and people said "what the hell does he know?"
Well, he knows because he is a highly trained singer who even studied opera for a year. And he had done musical theater since the age of nine. And he was right. The singing in this movie SUCKED. It was justified by "we wanted it to be live, and to seem more 'real life'" IT'S A FRICKIN MUSICAL! In real life I have never seen anyone burst into song while dying.
This video (yeah, it is 38 minutes long, so only for those interested in proper singing and musical theater will find it fascinating.) explains all that was wrong with the singing and how close they may have come to damaging their voices doing it for the film.
Just parenthetically, you know how Adam often talks about the importance of hydrating and drinking lots of water to keep the voice strong? That comes up in the critiques as Hugh Jackman drank nothing for 36 hours to lose weight to look emaciated and weak in part of the film. And how it affected his singing.
