I'm back into using Lose-it on my iPhone, and discovered a great new feature! It will scan barcodes and enter all the specifics about a food! Much faster and easier to create a recipe or enter a new item!
I really like the fact that it shows me a week at a time ... As SpiffySmile commented, I like being able to "save up" extra calories so I can indulge a little for a special occasion and not feel like I've cheated or fallen off the wagon.
I'm still working on getting up enough motivation to start exercising :-[

Nice to see folks back again, and welcome to the newbies. I didn't post yesterday because I SUCK . Just kidding - I'm not really getting down on myself, just being realistic. I am officially starting on Monday because I am still in my post Christmas hibernation/stupor. The kids go back to school on Monday and I will be able to refocus on me. Good luck to all.

So, I started the food journal last week and been posting away at it. So far still too much carbs, but I'll do my grocery run tomorrow and I plan to buy much healthier this week, holidays are over. Still had guests til New year and kids home, so first exercise will be tomorrow. Dreading it, but I just need to. Just like many here mentioned, I am noticing the muscle loss and also the reduced flexibility and that scares the s**t out of me, tbh. Will need to start slowly with the exercising, but I'll mix it up between swimming, strength building, basic aerobics, stretching and just walking, if possible (weather permitting) and hope that does not get too boring.
I volunteered in the kitchen today and that always is quite a workout, mostly upper body. It's those heavy mega size pots and pans, scubbing them, wrestling them in and out of the old industrial size dishwasher, hoisting the stuff up back onto their shelves, etc....it does add up, I am always drenched after 3 hours of that, so I am clearly doing something, so I have decided that counts as a workout. :-) That makes 3 more to go this week.
Now staying away from too much of the starches and sugar ...that is the other battle ahead of me.
Thanks guys for keeping me company, and thanks Jablea for organizing and spearheading the effort.

Wednesday - Exercise BandsA great way to strength train at home is with strechy bands. You can get the round elastic cord with handles or the wide rubber bands. You do have to be somewhat careful that you remain in control or they might snap back at you. In one of the videos I'll post below you'll see bands tied to the wall. Most of us don't have that but guess what. Door are really strong, no not the handle but the door itself. Take one of the wide rubber bands, tie a knot at one end, throw the knotted end out the door, and then close the door with you on one side the knot on the other. Pull as much as you want. Here's some examples www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Use-Exercise-Bands-230501943This is a world-wide exercise technique, share your favorite video. I sure am glad you all were posting today. I've barely had a chance to skim and I really want to try some of your ideas out.

Well if you haven't read Sauli's Healthy Lifestyle blog then you should. It makes me feel really pathetic for having trouble following the slightest exercise/eating plan. Wow, that boy has discipline! Or actually, as he says, he has a "lifestyle". He has inspired me to use that as a goal--not to loose x amount of weight but rather to have healthy become a lifestyle rather than a unwelcome short-term visitor in my life. I flaked on my first day of exercise, but I wont today.
By the way, Spiffysmile, I like your idea of a weekly goal that gives you room to have bad and good days! Makes sense.

Spiffysmile, I am a yo-yo dieter too. I have lost at least five adults since I was 16. I sometimes wonder how I made it into my 60s.
My meals for today are:
Breakfast: Same as first day. Although tomorrow I am going to make oatmeal. Yay!
Lunch: 3 oz. shrimp salad, 1/4 head lettuce, 1/2 medium tomato, 10 cucumber slices, iced tea
Dinner: Broiled lean hamburger (6 oz.), 1/2 cup cooked egg noodles, 1/2 cup veggies (brussel sprouts to night), 1 diet coke
Snack: 1/2 cup cereal, 1/2 cup skim milk, 1/2 banana
The shrimp I had last night was great. I used 3 oz. leftover shrimp for my lunch today. The diet calls for tuna fish salad, but I switched it to the leftover shrimp.
So far my husband and I are getting along fine with the diet. No complaints yet.
I am going to do some upper body weights after lunch. I read in my diet book that you should start exercising within the first hour after you eat as this will keep your metabolism working longer. Who knows. If all this stuff worked, I wouldn't be fat.
Glitztripper: Where did you read Sauli's Healthy Lifestyle blog? You can message me if you want.
Keep smiling. I am still positive. I feel lighter and less bloated already. My scale needs a new battery, and I am going to wait until the weekend to go out and buy one so I don't get tempted to weigh myself. Once a week is good enough. Everyday weight checking discourages me.
I bought one of those body shapers today from HSN. It is one of the long ones that come up under your breasts and down to your knees. I think they are suppose to come to the middle of your thighs but I am so short these things always come to my knees. I hope they don't roll up my thighs. I hate when that happens.

Checking in. Yesterday I did pretty well. I was hungrier than day 1 but not too bad. I need to shop for more low carb food now. I feel bad because I didn't walk yesterday.....again. I did clean the house actively for about 2 hours, non-stop and (just like refinishing the furniture) that is more exercise than normal. I was going to walk around 4:30 in the PM but my neighbor had an emergency and I needed to go over and stay with their special needs daughter for over 3 hours and then dinner and the walk never happened. I like the weekly goal mind set as well. The idea that a slight slip doesn't mean you've failed. Especially as time goes on, slips may happen but I'm going to try and "keep my eye on the prize". :D OTT - I DID, however, finish the 2nd book of The Hunger Games, yesterday. I bought the Trilogy for my DGD for Christmas - before Sauli's recommendation. On Christmas day, I read a few pages with her and it kind of grabbed me. I received a Kindle for Christmas and could get the 1st book free through Amazon - finished it in a couple of days and now finished the 2nd one (while babysitting). Most I've wanted to read since BA (before Adam). Also listened to my book group book on my IPod while I did housework. I'm not into that book nearly so much but I recommend the "listening while moving" theory. It keeps me on my feet longer. 8-)

Jablea - I am checking in (not really) But I do want to join in the shape up quest here. I wasn't very sucessful last year, and then I gained about 8 lbs. since then. Blame it on too much partying and playing with my gks.
I am too chicken to even get on the scales, but know that my jeans that were very loose last year are tight on me now.
I had reached an all time low (since my 40's) of 152, and was aiming at fitting into size 8 jeans that my friend had sent me when she went to the next lower size.
They are tucked away in a trunk now.................. I am feeling very dismal about my regression, as it is very hard for me to loose weight. More important to me now is getting into better physical shape. I am pushing 60 now (bd next month) and have found that my strength and stamina are sorely lacking. How I long to be able to run and play and dance the night away!
Ditto on Sauli's blog of today, he makes a lot of good points. Maybe we can appoint him our unofficial health guru (no offense Jablea - you rock!)
As I ramble away here, I am not quite sure of what my goals are, other than to loose some weight (15 lbs sounds doable to me) and get some regular exercise.
I really have no excuse for not exercising, my Dr. told me 2 years ago to get at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise daily, haven't done it yet.
I live out in the country with plenty of room to just walk, I have a weight machine gathering dust in my livingroom, and plenty of work out vids from "Hip Hop Abs" to Pilates to Yoga that haven't seen the DVR for years.
My problem is the lack of proper motivation. It's like smoking, I know I should quit, I know I would feel better and look better, but damn, I love to smoke, and I love to eat, and I love to sit on the computer all day stannning the fabulous AFL.
Am I hopeless?
Hope not.
I will not weigh till next Monday, and will be formulating a healthly plan for myself. Obviously, 8 glasses of water per day, cutting out fried foods and sweets, and eating more fresh vegetables and fruit, and getting some sort of regular exercise program going.
Maybe my son will send me that new dance vid for the XBox Kinnect?
I really admire those of you who have such challenging health issues and the fortitude to commit to a program of healthy living. Hope it will rub off on me! Check yall later..................

This is from Sauli's blog today, everyone is talking about it! Here is the most motivating part of it: I started jogging actively for about three years ago and it has already become a habit. I really do get into a bad mood if for some reason I can’t go out for a run. Usually starting a new sport or any kind of active exercise is often difficult for us all. I remember when I started jogging that at first it felt pretty boring and it was easy to come up with a reason why I couldn’t go for a run. I guess this is a familiar feeling for many of you too? You just have to make exercising to become a way of living for yourself, and not just a compulsive feeling of doing something. After you get that feeling into your head, you’re hooked! I don’t even think it as jogging anymore but it has become a way of living, and a part of my daily routine. In my opinion every one of us got to have some time, an hour or at least half an hour daily, for sports or to exercise. There are millions of excuses and I can’t say that I haven’t used some of them sometimes myself. I’m not trying to make an epitome of sports of myself here, but based on my own experiences it’s great to urge other people to exercise. Daily exercise is the best medicine for the minds of us all! At least it’s hardly harmful to anyone! Read more: www.adamtopia.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=sauli&thread=631&page=1#145640#ixzz1iW65BjZS
