Celebrating a return to the stage after an enforced two year-plus lay off due to the global pandemic, the rock icons blew the roof off the SSE Arena with a simply electrifying performance.
It may be a cliché to refer to them as rock royalty, but with Queen, really nothing less will suffice. Fittingly arriving onstage to a fanfare provided by a live orchestra, the band revealed their ornate production, very much setting the scene for a night at the opera complete with boxes for VIPs to soak up the action, up close and personal.
Kicking off with âNow Iâm Hereâ, before segueing into an extended medley of early cuts that included âTear it Upâ and âSeven Seas of Rhyeâ, the icons exuded charisma, with the songs and high energy performance lifting the atmosphere in the arena to fever pitch from the off.
Led by the flamboyant Adam Lambert, who strode on stage in sparkling suit, platform shoes, and ludicrously oversized top hat, the singer simply owned the stage. A born performer and show off, the American front man proved exactly why heâs spent a decade fronting the band, looking equal parts man in charge, and relaxed and at home, as he pranced, thrust, paraded and strutted his way up and down the catwalk into the centre of the arena.
With fan favourite âSomebody to Loveâ arriving early in the set, it was a chance for no only Lambert to show off his outstanding vocal range, but witness May solo on his infamous Red Special for the first time. A master of his instrument, the guitaristâs tone and phrasing were instantly recognisable, and a joy to hear in the live setting.
What followed was a veritable hit factory, worthy of their status as the ultimate singles band. From âKiller Queenâ to âBicycle Raceâ to âFat Bottomed Girlsâ to âI Want it Allâ, they just kept coming.
Greeting the crowd, Lambert appeared genuinely delighted to be back; âAre you guys having fun?â he asked, before confessing; âYou know that I'm a fan just like you. I'm so honoured to be up here to celebrate the one, the only, irreplaceable Freddie Mercury!â
