That was such a painful time. People who did not like Adam (or fans of others) and did not want him to succeed as a major talent often called him a drag queen, madam and a pervert or worse. They tried to make everything about his sexuality while dismissing his extraordinary talent, charisma and stage presence. He belonged in one box and they were determined to keep him in it with the lid on tight. Adam never tried to hide his sexuality. And he did emerge as a major talent to the chagrin of the naysayers who claimed being gay was the only reason he was getting attention. But he is sorta like Freddie and Elton. Yes they are gay but the talent is what many think about when they write about them and invite them (Elton and Adam) to perform at prestigious and high profile events. Great role models for their community but also great, successful and highly respected talented men. |
