How to Be Like Adam in 10 Easy Lessons [/color]

January is all about New Year’s resolutions and top ten lists, bombarding us with tips that promise to make us slimmer, sexier, and and more fascinating than ever before. But why waste your time with those when you have inspiration right in front of you? Here are ten ways in which Adam inspires us to be our best selves!

(Credit for this idea comes from, of all places, Forbes magazine and their recent article “How to Be More Interesting in 10 Simple Steps”).



1. Go exploring. Have you ever noticed that Adam embodies the true joy of exploration? By his own admission, he spends too much money downloading music, just for the hell of it. He tweets us links to videos that range from the sublime to the ridiculous. He mixes and matches outrageous camp with high fashion. He treks into the desert to experience Burning Man. And as he said just last week in the Press Party interview, he even explores his own desires and fears, dark and light.

Because of Adam, I have been places (Oklahoma), had experiences (general admission madness), and been exposed to music, art, opinions, and ideas I had never even considered before. Adam has made curiosity a habit and consequently is always discovering and exploring cool things. What’s next for you?



2. Share what you discover. This one is a little harder. Sharing is an act of profound vulnerability. As most of us have experienced, even sharing something as humble as a plate of homemade cookies can make us feel diminished if the recipient is clueless or ungrateful (“ew I hate nuts”).

Adam embodies this quote from Madeleine L’Engle: “When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability... To be alive is to be vulnerable.” Adam went exploring in his own heart and now he’s ready to share it all through the fun and beauty of music and live performance. It’s a generous and brave way to live, and it’s what makes him great.

What can you share? Pictures? Flowers? Cookies? A ride? A funny story? Passion? Dreams? A listening ear? A word of encouragement? That too is like Adam.



3. Do something. Anything. Adam once said that before Idol, he was bored with his life. Then he made a truly exciting and creative decision that, with any luck, will last for decades: to forsake the life of the theater to explore his own creativity. Taking that big a risk is not something most of us are in a position to do. But consider Adam’s off hours – good food, good friends, sunsets, movies, art and theater … what could you do that would bring you fun, pleasure, delight, or even attention – even if it wasn’t for any “purpose”?



4. Embrace your inner weirdness. In August, Adam stood up to accept his Equality award and announced to the whole world, “I’m going to keep on being that weird fuckin’ fag.” Why do you think Adam decided to embrace that self-description? Sometimes people who don’t like Adam call him names like that, or worse. They think he’s silly. They even wonder aloud why he just can’t be more like everyone else.

There is an old movie called “What’s So Bad About Feeling Good?” where people became infected with a virus that caused them to respect themselves and be kind to other people. Next thing anyone knew, they were happy and trying to spread the virus to others while scientists worked desperately for a cure!

That’s how I feel when critics deride Adam and his fans, as if our having fun is somehow offensive to the sensibilities of others who have to witness it. How has Adam helped you embrace the part of you that is playful, expressive, and spontaneous – in other words, weird? How has it influenced other parts of your life? Are there quirks and insights you are proud of now that you used to try to hide?



5. Give a damn. Here’s a story about my dad and his co-worker named Bob. Bob was a pleasant guy, but he never seemed to do anything around the office. Dad thought he was a real dud. A few years back, Dad went to Bob’s funeral. Bob was Chinese and it turned out his real name was Ping. It turned out Ping was a very passionate person. He gave of himself tirelessly to help Chinese immigrants settle in our city, get their visas going, get enrolled in school and find jobs. He was anything but a dud; in fact, to a lot of people he was a hero.

Let’s face it – we can’t give our best selves to everything in our lives. No one has that much energy. For Bob, his best self wasn’t for his work; he saved it for his community. Adam gives his best self to his music and his loved ones. Some of us are lucky enough to have a passion for our work, but in this day and age of budget cuts and recession, that might not be possible. If you have lost your passion, it just means a new one is out there -- waiting for someone who truly gives a damn. Waiting for you, just like we were waiting for Adam and didn’t even know it.
