Billboard's Review of QAL- iHeart 9/20/2013 www.billboard.com/articles/columns/music-festivals/5719329/iheartradio-music-festival-friday-katy-perry-roars-but-theOf course, Queen and accomplished pop vocalist Adam Lambert had to do more than just show up and run through the rock group's back catalog in order to earn the headlining slot over Perry on Friday night. With each new show, Lambert's involvement with the five-decade-old band makes more sense: Freddie Mercury's king-sized songwriting makes for a perfect vessel for Lambert's operatic wail, and iHeartRadio fest attendees who wanted to stick around for "Another One Bites The Dust" got to witness the magnetic power of Lambert's pristine high notes. The former "American Idol" runner-up oozed charisma as he strutted around the stage, winking at his reputation of a fill-in while also reminding people they should still pay attention to his solo career whenever this stint with Queen, er, bites the dust. By the time that Nate Ruess and the rest of fun. joined Queen and Lambert for "Fat Bottomed Girls," t he audience seemed to pick up on how special the performance was -- not just because it featured a hard-to-duplicate collaboration, but because that collaboration was uniformly excellent. Queen/Lambert was an unconventional headliner on Friday night, but Lambert's manicured vocal blasts were able to harness rock songs that everyone in attendance knew and loved -- "Bohemian Rhapsody," anyone? -- which more than than made up for the lack of a current pop star closing out the show.

Following Perry came the most anticipated act of the night: Queen with Lambert. Before their set, Queen’s Taylor and Brian May spoke to Rolling Stone about why Lambert is such a great fit for their music."He does bring his own approach and he has this amazing range, a gymnastic, beautiful tone and he really fits our material so well," Taylor said of Lambert. " He has all the elements – he has the passion, he has the humor, a little bit of camp. And when the shots are down, he has the power. It’s incredible," May added.Lambert astounded the audience on songs like "We Will Rock You" and the closing "We Are The Champions" and "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love." He frequently worked in unison with May, the two sharing the front of the stage as the guitarist reminded everyone of his considerable prowess by bringing his parts in "Bohemian Rhapsody" to life. Fun’s Nate Ruess took over vocals on "Somebody To Love." He then brought Lambert back out ( praising him as "one of the best singers I know") for the supergroup combo on the rollicking "Fat Bottomed Girls." The night ended appropriately with a triumphant "We Are The Champions."

The VerdictIn summation, Adam Lambert commanded the iHeartRadio Music Festival stage extremely well and it was the perfect tribute to Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Brian May and Roger Taylor. He put on a flawless concert and it was a standout set from this year's music festival. Their late front-man Freddie Mercury would have been proud of his spell-binding performance. Lambert proved yet again that he is one of the most underrated male vocalists in contemporary music.

Brian May: at rehearsals, I was sometimes overwhelmed with emotion. When I first him perform Who Wants To Live Forever, I was literally stunned. Just was not ready for such an amazing interpretation of the song.

Roger Taylor's interview posted by Talon on today's news thread (9/25/2013) Excerpt: Q: Is it easier having Adam Lambert singing with Queen? RT: He slips into it more easily. Paul has a perfect blues and soul voice, but our songs are big and dare I say it theatrical, and Adam fits that more easily. We've not discussed making an album, no. But Adam is closer to Freddie. Paul was macho, but Adam is a diva. His range is staggering.Read more: adamtopia.com/thread/1916/qal-ihrmf-played-radio-nyc?page=3#ixzz2fv1tcjwN
