One possibility for the person the musical might be based on is Jayne County (stage name), rocks first openly trans singer. Also, songwriter, actress, and record producer in 1970's New York. Considered to be an influence on Bowie and on John Cameron Mitchell's musical Hedwig. Also was in some Andy Warhol productions.

I couldn't read the article. But I would think one would still choose outfits that look good on and are appropriate for you and your rock/pop-rock or whatever career. And not something a 150 lb 22 year old would look cool wearing (crop tops on LNX look good on his very fit body). I have not liked all of Adam's fashion choices (but have loved many of them) but thankfully he is not one of those men who try to dress up like teenage girls. Just don't get the appeal or message given of grown men trying to look like teenagers.

I think pretty much through the ages we've seen people, men and women, wearing questionable clothing choices. And someone will always applaud and some will shake their head. I look back at myself in my 20's and I'm shaking my head lol. And I look at some of Adam's fashion choices and shake my head too. But then he turns around and looks breathtakingly gorgeous and all is forgiven lol.
