Adam Lambert doesn’t do subtle, he is theatrical through and through – and we are here for it. The gravitas towards all things dramatic is ever present throughout his latest offering ‘High Drama’ – an album of bold reimagined tracks personally curated by the singer himself.
This genre-spanning collection of reimagined covers takes some of Adam’s favourite songs by artists like Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Bonnie Tyler, Sia, Duran Duran and Kings Of Leon to a different dimension thanks to the classic ‘Adam Lambert’ treatment. Case in point – ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ which has been transformed into a glam rock extravaganza!
Adam’s exemplary interpretation of Culture Club’s ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’ is multi-faceted and intriguing, serving lines like ‘Choose my color, find a star’ in a fresh, sophisticated and laidback way.
Lambert’s musical theatre background is evident in Billie Eilish’s ‘Getting Older’ which has him reflecting on the universal fear of ageing and gives a far-reaching emotional performance.
He channels his inner Prince for his take on ‘Sex On Fire’ which is transformed from a raucous rock track to a dance-fuelled floor filler that is multi-textured and effervescent. Another standout is Duran Duran’s ‘Ordinary World ‘is spine-tinglingly good and Adam’s capability to effortlessly combine his endearing vulnerability with powerhouse vocals which his trademark falsetto.

High Drama also offers lesser known and less recent titles, some of which already had a queer sensibility .“ I'm A Man is probably the darkest song on the album. It's a very interesting way of describing masculinity, almost ahead of its time," says Adam Lambert about this song by Jobriath released in 1973.“He's kind of an unsung hero. Technically, he was the first openly gay man signed to a major record label in America,” argues the singer, who has a strong fondness for 1970s music.During his audition at American Idol, he had also chosen to interpret Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. This song written by Freddie Mercury set the tone for his career.She allowed him to vocally show what he was capable of while displaying his admiration for this queer icon .This experience culminated in 2011 when he was invited to sing with the members of Queen. This collaboration continues to this day. Along with British musicians, Adam Lambert had the chance to sing for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. Adam Lambert is currently working on a major project he imagined during the pandemic: a musical!
“The creative process for this project is much longer; we had to work with a screenwriter to make sure the story was right”, explains the artist trained in theater who has played in several musicals.
"Theater is where I discovered how to perform in front of an audience," says Adam Lambert.
His musical is set in 1970s New York and is inspired by a true story. This will appear in the form of a concept album, in addition to possibly being presented on stage.
