I was in the 2nd half of 9th grade (Jan 1971) before girls were allowed to wear "pant suits" to public high school. It was another year before we could wear jeans like the boys. Now no one thinks twice about females wearing pants. In this respect, females now have more freedoms than males! IMHO, males will not be as free until they can wear skirts/dresses, if they want, and the general public does not care. You must be the same age as me! 1970 I started Grade 9 which was the first year of high school and girls were allowed to wear pants. I don't think I ever wore a skirt again to school! LOL Before that girls wore thick tights which we called leotards in the winter and I remember thinking it was really unfair that boys could wear pants. I kind of doubt if any of the boys were looking at us in our dresses in the warm months and thinking how unfair it was that they had to wear pants. I'm pretty sure the dress code did not allow anyone to wear shorts! But maybe one or two of the boys were thinking that but would never had admitted it! I grew up in Louisiana, which was often a few years behind other parts of the country in these types of things. I often thought that our dresses had become short enough that they realized that letting us wear pants would be the lessor of 2 evils.

I grew up in Ontario, Canada on military bases so maybe there were stricter dress codes at my elementary schools. I only remember one girl wearing really short skirts and I think she had gogo boots too.
