CONCERT REVIEW: Queen, with Adam Lambert in fold, stay relevant in Toronto The group played to a packed house at Scotiabank Arena Queen and Adam Lambert Scotiabank Arena Sunday night RATING: ***1/2 (3 and a half out of four )
The show must go on.
And so it has for Queen, who lost their exceptional lead singer Freddie Mercury back in 1991 after forming in 1970.
Most recently, the veteran British rockers — still going strong with founding guitarist Brian May, 76, and drummer Roger Taylor, 74, in the lineup — have found success again with powerhouse singer Adam Lambert lending his massive pipes to the group.
In fact, Lambert, 41, reminded the Toronto crowd at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday night that he’d been with the group for 10 years now and thanked them and the audience for giving him “a shot.”
He needn’t have thanked anyone.
The two-hour-and-15-minute concert, which came to glorious life courtesy of a large, multi-screen stage with two opera boxes filled with lucky fans on either side, opened with Radio Ga Ga — which would be revived again during the encore — and Lambert was in exceptional voice from the get-go.
The American Idol runner-up also looked pretty amazing as he’s clearly never met a sequined suit and platform boot he didn’t like with his ever-changing hair currently bleached blonde and short with a tuft of black at the front.
Lambert proved pretty good at hamming it up too, whether it was lying back seductively on a rotating motorcycle that rose out of the front of the catwalk during Bicycle Race or pretending to drink champagne and put on makeup while singing Killer Queen.
