twitter.com/ForbesEnt/status/1728802072064061720Few acts have been able to reach a new, younger generation of fans quite the way that English rockers Queen have. Thanks to savvy placement of their music in films like Wayne’s World (1992) and the 2018 Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, the group now has the rare luxury of reaching three generations of fans, a spectacle which was on full display last month as the group took to the stage for the first of two sold out performances at Chicago’s United Center. “It’s incredible. It keeps us alive. It keeps us young. Because our audience is all ages, yeah,” said co-founding guitarist Brian May during a conversation last year. “All kinds. All colors, all sizes, all shapes. And it’s wonderful to know that we can connect the generations and every race on earth. Which is amazing for us,” he said. “It’s a dream come true. That’s what you dream when you start off as a musician and as a rock band. You just want to be able to get to the whole world and connect with the whole world. And I believe we have.” Since forming in 1970, Queen, who are a set for a run of Japanese dates in February 2024, has sold nearly 300 million records around the world as one of the best selling acts of all time. For May and drummer Roger Taylor, their partnership now spans more than 50 years, with the pair joined again on the current outing by vocalist and former American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert. “It’s extraordinary. I think we’re closer now than we ever were,” said Taylor of his relationship with May during a separate conversation last year. “We’re very close,” he said. “And we know we are sort of mutually reliant. We need one another, you know? We are all that’s left of Queen. And we feel that’s a precious thing. And we feel protective of it. We’re proud of our achievement and our past. So we share so much.” Lambert masterfully approaches the unenviable task of revisiting Freddie Mercury - one of rock’s great frontmen - with aplomb, channeling the one-of-a-kind singer without ever imitating him, putting his own spin upon a bevy of celebrated songs. In Chicago, Lambert made his way down a runway from the main stage to a smaller B stage set within the audience on the arena floor as Queen tore into “Hammer to Fall” early in the set on night one, the United Center crowd exploding as the singer placed his left hand on May’s right shoulder as the song drew to a close. Oh my. Thank you so much. One of Adam's absolutely stunning performances. He looked so gorgeous that it hurts. HA!!!! It is a crime that this song and Feel Something were never played on radio and pushed. I know some love the more popish stuff (I enjoy some of it too) but why couldn't some of his emotional and heartfelt songs be given a chance too?
