I overthink things, too. For a while, I have wondered if there was some type of tension (not the best word but drawing a blank) with Queen and Adam, or perhaps more specifically, Brian and Adam. I can’t put my finger on any one thing, but to say that as someone who, until recently, probably focused more on QAL than on Adam solo, at times, it felt like something was a bit strained or slightly “off” or maybe missing at times, not just with performances but in the lack of off-stage interactions that we have been accustomed to seeing. I noticed that in North America 2023, too. I know that it is doubtful this collaboration can go on too long except for some one-offs, I would be sad if any of that family feeling they always said they had lessened. I still find it strange that they came over just for Japan. If anything, it would seem that Australia would also be a “one more time” tour as well. I don’t know if Adam’s Australia engagements could be problematic with tour dates, but it seems like some accommodations could be made. As I said earlier, I overthink, so possibly I just need to get out more and skip some videos!
Like you I‘ve been thinking about Adam’s relationship with Brian and Roger at times. In their earlier years it seemed that Brian and Adam were a lot closer. But after looking closely, it hasn’t changed that much. On stage their interaction is still the same and Brian does still speak highly and very respectful of Adam in interviews. What we haven’t seen for a long while are more private interactions backstage.
But I think there are several reasons for that. When you look at both Adam and Brian as individuals they don’t really have much in common. Brian especially seems to live in his own world at times, always busy with all his projects in the universe and for animals, but he also tends to take his time for himself to overthink things and at times struggling with his mental health. Brian is an absolute perfectionist and stubborn as a rock. So Brian needs his space, which is especially noticeable, when you realize, that the QAL band isn’t always staying in the same hotel. Especially Brian sometimes enjoys a different hotel. but Adam has done it as well. Then there is Roger, who’s like a brother to Brian. But a brother with completely different interests (apart from Queen of course). They are often like polar opposites and don’t really spend time together, if it isn’t for Queen. You don’t see much interaction between Brian and Roger backstage either. BUT Adam and Roger have developed a tight friendship. They’ve been on holidays together at least three times and now they’re even business partners with their bar.
So my conclusion has been this: The relationship between these three men is fine. But it has changed through the years, while they got to know each other better and better and their personalities have evolved too. Adam and Roger (even more) love to enjoy life, while Brian often struggles with it. He was also very cautious with covid and his health during the 2022 tour, while Adam and Roger had fiends and family come in and out of their bubble. Maybe that also bothered Brian, who knows. But they‘re all „brothers in music“ and friends with a huge respect for each other.
And I guess they know their weaknesses and that’s why they don’t dare to go into a studio and record new music together. Queen very often fought hard in the studio. They were four dickheads and Brian and Roger fought the hardest. Without their former peace maker Freddie, who resolved many fights within the band, it could become more difficult to find common ground. It would also be a weird situation for Adam to either sit between them or being the third stubborn dickhead. The result could be brilliant. Or it could be the end of the collaboration.
At least that’s how I see it and I might be wrong, since we only get glimpses of what happens between them.
