The only thing I can think of is that Adam was returning from Burning Man and stopped to clean up and re-enter the real world in Reno, which is pretty close to Burning Man. It wouldn't surprise me--many people get a hotel room for the day or two after the burn so they can remove the dust and get some rest before going back to normal life. That would have been the end of August, beginning of September so the timeline sounds about right.
