I get that TJ is a nice guy. And very cute. And gets along well with Adam. And looks the part for the band. And plays guitar. And can learn a bass line. I get all that.
But, as a musician? Not so much. He's played guitar since he was twelve. Lots of kids pick up the guitar at that time. He's been in several bands, tho' none performed for actual money, he said in an interview. Lots of kids form garage bands. And play gigs for free. And hope one day to become badass rock stars.
He also can play a bass line on the keys. And play piano, but, self-admittedly not well. This is not uncommon for thousands and thousands of aspiring rock musicians.
What I don't see in TJ's bio, or in his playing, is any indication of study in music, of lessons, of formal training. Can someone be an extraordinary musician without those things? Yes. Tho' that is uncommon. I haven't heard or seen TJ do anything musically that stands out to me.
Kevin has a strong base as a musician. He has formally studied his craft. While he did nothing extraordinary with his guitar work (and the guitar needed a good tuning -- ouch) his keyboard work, his choice of chords and harmonies is sophisticated and creative. His ability to transpose the keys of songs and play them in new keys shows a depth of musical knowledge. His vocal harmonies also show, not a trained singer, but a musician who understands how to sing harmonies. Kevin has the musical chops to support Adam in whatever way he needs. Haven't seen that in TJ. He can learn a part, play a part, and fits in with Adam's vision. He has a purpose. But, not as a stellar musician.
Don't mean to step on toes here. Not intending to slam TJ. Just responding to why Kevin is chosen if Adam only has room or place for one backing musician.

Oh my god, I'm baaack. For a minute. #can'tshutuptonight #needafilter (hey, that should be my new sign in name!) OY
Anyway, just want to say that, Cassie, I don't have ANY disagreement with anything you're saying. I'm not sure your post was directed to me, but I certainly DID NOT MEAN to imply ANY questioning of why Kevin was with Adam instead of Tommy. Seems pretty obvious to me! That question was raised earlier by someone else and I was only responding to the statement that Tommy didn't play any other instruments. And I clearly didn't really know what I was talking about. I knew he played piano -- didn't realize he had said that he doesn't play well. And I thought he played keyboards at the AMAs -- wrong again!
It's kind of sad that I'm not more musically knowledgeable since there are musicians in my family...but from what I can tell and what little I have read about Kevin, he seems like a very talented and creative musician. As far as his performances with Adam, I have the same problem so many people have with watching or being aware of anyone else during Adam's performances -- it's hard to pay attention to him, because I'm focused on Adam. But I was aware of the moments where Adam stopped singing and we could clearly hear Kevin's backup vocals, and they were very nice. I don't think we've had a backup singer since Lisa (?), and I agree that it's great that Kevin can do that. As I see more performances, I'm sure I'll get more of a feel for what he's doing.
Wow -- after the Blonds Adam did New Now Next, and tomorrow VH1 -- I can't believe the schedule that he has! I don't know how he does it! I'm exhausted trying to keep up with it all, it's pretty incredible. Not to mention how he can continue to look beautiful and remain articulate...
