Cabaret, part 4, posts starting 10/19/24

At least you probably won't find the usual "but he's not Freddie!!!!" comments lol.

It does seem like he's been well received...let's hope it brings more opportunities.  

There are the random few on reddit, but mostly very positive comments.

However, I just came across this thread on reddit about the Cabaret audiences from 3 days ago.  Many concluded that it had to do with Wednesday matinees in general.

I just got back from a Cabaret matinee and found the audience to be absolutely insufferable. The play was good but literally could not stand anyone in the audience. Wow all the Broadway shows I never had that happen. Bunch of old grumpy people who thought their shit didn’t stink and pretty rude to everyone.

Is this a thing for that show??

Adam has become this production's MVP and cleared himself a path towards becoming a big Broadway star. I would pay for a professional recording of this production with him.

I saw it last weekend and totally agree about Adam Lambert! I didn't have the experience with the audience, but I was so moved by the show that I shuffled around my upcoming London trip to see the production there as well.

This comment puts Wednesday matinees in perspective.. maybe:

I think you are generally describing Wednesday matinee audiences, particularly once a show has been running for a while. I always pack extra patience at Wednesday matinees.

Hearing aids buzzing, a lot of people put out by having to stand for people in the middle of the row to show up after them, etc. Older crowds who are still not used to food and beverage being permissible at musicals (still not a fan of that myself, tbh). All of this is par for the course.

And for classic plays, school groups with kids who don’t always stay quiet. When I saw The Crucible with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney, I remember right at the end in Neeson’s last scene some highschooler shouted out “MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU, QUI-GON!!”

In my experience this can be true for some shows. However I’ve been to many matinees in the last few years and found it less so. It certainly wasn’t my experience when I saw Cabaret at the Wednesday matinee last month. I sat at a table and people sitting around me were all different ages including 16 & 17 year olds. I also think because of the way the production is set up as an authentic club gives the audience a different way to experience the play. Also I doubt this would be a play a school would take their students to, it’s way too risqué. Although the history lesson would be a good one.
