With all the back and forthing about "replacing" Freddie and who does it best I finally went back and looked at some Youtube vids - gotta say, Marc Martel creeped me out. I lasted about 30 seconds. First, if I wanted to see the original Queen, I would watch/listen to the originals. A person trying to clone Freddie just doesn't do it at all. I love a lot of Queen songs, always have. But if I can't have the original, then I want someone who loves the music, and sings for the love of it, and to have fun with it all at the same time. That honors the original instead of trying to recreate it.

LMAO!! I love those new banana smileys. They always crack me up. Watching the Queen documentary; about to start pt. 3 right now, but think I'll grab some breakfast first. It's really amazing. When they did the close up of Freddie singing "Killer Queen," I got chills. I want Adam to sing this sooooo bad. And wow!! what innovation and brilliance and yes, their voices did mesh so beautifully. I didn't realize it was the four of them singing the harmony of "Somebody to Love," I always thought it was a choir or several backup vocalists. Amazing!! What is the name of the documentary? I want to watch it.

I agree. Did Queen have anything of their own to promote at the time of the AI8 finale? If not, then I'd say the producers had to entice them with something pretty special. You can't convince me that Danny, Kris, or Allison would lure them onto the show. At whatever point Queen agreed, I'm guessing that the producers were certain the the final 2 would be Adam/someone. ITA.. No.. If Danny, Kris or even Allison couldn't make Slash coming and mentor AI then I doubt that Brian would even wanted to check AI again. I agree with rihannsu.. IT HAD TO BE ADAM and also the fact that Led Zep had agreed to let Adam sing their song. And that's the first time they gave their approval. I think that Slash going on Idol because of Adam is a myth -- or at least it was never said publicly. Slash posted he was going to mentor Rock Week on April 27. 2009 -- two days before the Top 5 Rat Pack results show -- so he did not even know that Adam was going to make it to Rock Week. Slash wrote this about his decision to mentor on Idol: American Idol producers convinced reluctant rocker Slash to mentor contestants on the TV singing competition by handing over complete control of their upcoming rock-themed week.
The former Guns 'N' Roses star will advise the final four hopefuls on this week's Rock Week.
And Slash admits he was a skeptic even after other high-profile entertainers -- including filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and actor/singer Jamie Foxx -- served as mentors this season.
He writes on his MySpace blog: "I was reluctant at 1st, but they offered me the freedom to do it however I wanted. More importantly, there are a few singers this year who are really impressive. It's the 1st time any AI line-up has really caught my attention... Those AI kids can sing their a**es off." 'American Idol': Rock Week mentor Slash digs Adam Lambert EW.com May 5, 2009 by Mandi Bierly
This week’s American Idol mentor, Slash, is already praising frontrunner Adam Lambert, via Twitter. The guitarist, who emphatically tweeted "I’m going to attempt to make ‘Rock Week’ on American Idol exactly that’ on April 29, has followed with other messages to his 14,677 followers: "The contestants from AI picked some really cool songs for next week, thank god!" on May 1, and "Those AI kids can sing their asses off, especially Adam" on May 2. We’ll see the fruits of Slash’s labor tonight, when American Idol‘s final four take the stage.Link: news-briefs.ew.com/2009/05/05/american-idol-a/But as far as I can tell he never said he want on the show because of Adam. At the time, if he had said this, it would have been a big deal and been added to the lists of complaints about the producers favoring Adam. Adam's run on Idol was spectacular. And he impressed a lot of people -- from Smokey to Slash to Queen. And Randy Travis will never forget him!! But some of the history is getting embellished at bit.

I have a faint memory of Slash interview, where he said that he had seen Adam, and he was the only one even close to be interesting participant in Idol (like ever) and so Slash asked to be invited to see Idol performance. Starting from that he was also persuated to coach. Maybe someone can help to identify the interview? Or maybe I am dreaming.. ETA: Thank you SusieFierce!
