I get a HUGE kick with his vocabulary and I'm VERY impressed not only because it's a rare thing but also because the majority of the words he uses are Greek! :D
asphyxiation metaphorical catharsis dichotomy symbiotic microcosm hedonist esoteric epiphany
and so many others!
These words are so familiar to me of course and I noticed that many US people don't know the meaning, I see often people on twitter asking about these greek words that Adam uses, so I guess they're not common words in the English vocabulary?

Adam used the word "conceptualize" in one of his recent interviews. Of course, I can't find it again. I'll have to spend some time looking for it...maybe Portland, OR. Anyway, I wanted to get it down.
Question? What were the influences in Adam's life that gave him his sizable vocabulary?
His parents? English classes in school? Studying for SATs (I doubt it)? Reading? song lyrics and musicals?
It is probably a combination of things but it is amazing or should I say Adamazing how he can use words accurately.

Hi Cassie, I love Adam talking too -- even when he's answering the same old questions. Just like his ability to make his songs a bit different each time, he always manages to make his interviews interesting. He has a large vocabulary -- we know he reads books! -- but also he has listened to a lot of diverse music over the years and in those lyrics are many words and he seems to have soaked them all in.
I made a note the other day March 14 on 107.5 part 1, after he sang Cukoo. He talked about "embracing how crazy I really am. Celebrating your lunacy. Is that a word? Enjoying being a nutbag." I thought it was cute that he questioned his use of the word lunacy.
ps I see that LifeisNow2 already mentioned influences. I totally agree.

I'm techie deficient and don't know how to link to interviews, but there was an interview with Sean Valentine 4/04/12. The question was about scented candles. Adam explained that he is not into Yankee Candles. He said "I'm a little bougie with my candles. I like them to smell a little bit more sophisticated." Bougie=slang for bourgeois

I am sure it is a combination of many things, but I think it starts in the home. Eber is some kind of computer whiz/geek, right? But also a poet. So, I am thinking well-educated, highly intelligent, with a love of words. I don't know anything about Leila's educational background, but she has seemed articulate in interviews. Neil also has that love of words and wants to be a professional writer/commentator. So, I am thinking the home environment was rich in language stimuli with lively discussions. Add to that that Adam is one of seemingly few in his generation who reads and loves it, and the fact that he seems to have a remarkable ear and memory for music and words, and we may have somewhat of an answer. Regardless of where that facility came from, I enjoy hearing it!

My daughter just pointed out that the French word for candle is bougie (feminine). Very clever of Adam! Hah!

I noticed a good majority of Adam's vocabulary in interviews lately seems to be "I'm not cool enough to work with Pharrell!"
