You know it is disheartening to see so many negative comments about repeat customers. I understand that it is frustrating for those of us who haven't had the opportunity to meet him seeing people get multiple chances but to project that onto Adam and infer that he is somehow sending messages of disapproval for this is petty.
Artists NEED repeat customers. If you aren't inspiring passion and loyalty in your followers they will move on to the next thing of the moment. Repeat customers show that you are being really noticed and are really touching people. In one of the recent M&G's when it was pointed out that the ladies from TALC were there Adam lit up and said "My girls". These ladies have been following him around since the Idol Finale.
Also don't forget that the ultimate in terms of repeat customers were the "Deadheads" many of whom went to EVERY DEAD CONCERT EVER and it is one of the things that is notable about the band, that ability to inspire that kind of devotion.
Aerosmith gave free lifetime concert and backstage passes to a couple of fans who went to MANY paid M&G's for years. They could have just kept taking the girls money over and over but they rewarded that perseverance and determination with FREE LIFETIME passes.
Bono of U2 often pulls a girl up on stage with him to dance in concerts and many think that this is about "hot girls" but this actually started well before they ever had their record deal and the first ever pulled up on stage by a 17 or 18 year old Bono at shows in Ireland was the bands first real "groupie" a 30 year old woman who was coming to every one of the bands appearances. Bono has spoken very fondly of how it touched him to see this woman over and over at shows. She wasn't "pretty" and she was probably a little touched in the head as Bono would say but she LOVED them the way we love Adam.
If you believe Adam is telling the truth when he talks about his appreciation for his fans "having his back" why is it so difficult to believe that he LOVES seeing familiar faces. I don't have the specific reference but in one interview he talked about how seeing familiar faces in the front at GNT over and over inspired him to put extra effort in to making every show a unique experience. He did this singing the SAME songs over and over. If not for repeat customers he might not have felt as much need to really play with his performances.
ALL of the really big artists have devoted fans and repeat customers and quite frankly if you don't you need to find a new line of work. The hardcore fans don't make the artist a top seller but they do make for CONSISTENT sellers. Concert promoters want acts that have strong loyal followings because those acts will consistently sell tickets.
I mentioned this before but there was a group of fans that went to many U2 concerts through about 3 albums worth of touring in the 80's. These fans found each other online and got together again for a concert during U2's 360 tour and manage to get up next to the stage. Bono recognized them and gave them a shout out from the stage. In the early days of U2 there were fans who followed them to shows all across Europe and there were about 13 who ended up piling in to the bands hotel rooms and camping out on their floors and the band speaks fondly of how it felt to have that kind of support.
My opinion on this subject is that Adam LOVES his repeat customers and I doubt he really cares how old they are or what they look like. Given the penchant for Idols to loose popularity over time maybe what Adam is doing is pointing out to the radio peeps that he has not lost his loyal following. If the radio stations had a problem with repeat customers from one station to another they could always disallow people who won more than one M&G in a city.
Don't you think Adam might get a little worried if he suddenly stops seeing repeat customers? Might he not worry that he is loosing his connection with his fans?
Absolutely agree with you in regards to concerts.. Of course who doesn't want repeat customers. When there is room for only 20 people at a Radio gig,not so sure.Just saying.. I really have no answers ,just my opinion, not based on facts or knowledge of how Adam feels.
