Ok, so I was the one who mentioned Bieber earlier and I decided to go to Billboard and look at his chart history specifically on the CHR Radio chart which is Pop Songs. He has had 7 songs on this chart and of those only three made the top 20. One Time peaked at #14, Baby at #16 and Somebody To Love at #20. His highest peak on the Radio Songs chart which tracks overall AI across formats was #24. I could find no Adult Pop Songs (HAC) entries and he had 2 Adult Contemporary (AC) #2 and #3 both xmas songs. He has however 20 songs that have hit the Hot 100 which is sales, airplay and streaming even there only 2 top ten and the highest was at #5. So here is the case of someone who has had great sales and in the public eye is seen as a HUGE success and yet in the realm of Top 40 radio is really not all the huge. I think though that if you asked the average person on the street how many #1 songs Bieber has had I would bet they would say more than one. Perception is as important as the actual statistics. What would hurt Adam more at this point than BTIKM not getting higher on the charts would be the media portraying it as a flop and so far we haven't had that. But that is my main problem with all the fan angsting is that we KNOW certain media outlets monitor the fan sites and if WE call it a flop we increase the chance that media will call it that as well. Of course it would start with the nastier bloggers but you can never tell if those things will pick up steam or not. All I can say is it's a VERY GOOD THING that the media LOVES Adam as much as they do because right now they WANT Adam to be a success. If they ever turned against him though it could be brutal. Bieber has something that Adam doesn't have. Millions of elementary age/tween girls buying his music. It's the same thing that is happening to One Direction. They had more people show up at The Today show than any artist in the history of Today show concerts. Their album is opening this week at around 200K and it is number one on charts all over the world. You don't need CHR hits, when you have millions of little girls and their Moms buying your albums, merchandise and concert tickets. Justin had three songs in the top 20 on CHR. Adam hasn't been able to break into the top 50 on CHR with this single. There really isn't much comparison here on "perception". Justin Beiber is massively popular with fans who are too young for Top 40 radio -- they want 15-18 to 29 year olds. Michael Buble has similar problems because his fans are way too old. Adam fans are not as polarized as either of the above two artists. Regarding Adam's airplay -- press support really does not matter -- they just need to release a song that fits Top 40 radio and he will get airplay. BTIKM is an Adult Pop Track. They will release a Pop Track and he will get airplay. Finally, RCA seems to have wanted to capture older female Idol fans with BTIKM and the push on HAC prior to the album release. I guess this strategy makes sense even though it is hard for long-time Adam fans (like me) who wanted a single to "explode" on Pop Radio. I am patient and I will wait for single #2 which I expect to see "EXPLODE" on Pop Radio. |

I just read that Lisa Marie Presley is releasing her album May 15th and will be promote it on American Idol ("tentatively scheduled in May")....when are we expecting Adam to perform, and do you think he'll be singing BTIKM??
I think I've missed the discussions on this subject.....I want him to debut his new single on Idol. Is that likely...or not?

I want to vote but wasn't sure what the rules were for international voting that's why I asked if it was allowed (probably phrased it poorly). I know radio stations only want local requests and voting so....yeah...that's where I was going. I do my vh1 voting and I'm doing to mtv thing but I honestly don't have the time to vote on every poll Adam is entered on so I only do the ones I know I'm allowed to regardless of where I live....I do appreciate people who take the time to provide information for those people who do want to vote on every poll. Just two words: I'm sorry :-/  If I had a clue that it could cause Adam's disqualification, I wouldn't do it. And because we got Adam on #1, I won't post reminders anymore. No need to be sorry. Most radio stations do not care where the votes come from -- they just want traffic. It is best is whoever is local does their best to figure out if the poll they post is 1. Really important (will get Adam airplay or TV video plays) and 2. Is really open to people from outside of the market. We have had a few occasions where Adam was removed from voting because there were too many votes from outside the market. For example, WSTW Wilmington, Delaware specifically says they only want local votes. These are the places that we need to be careful about. Finally, it is most important that people request locally. Everything else is a plus for Adam. |

Why would RCA want to "capture older female Idol fans"? Doesn't Adam already have enough of those. I believe RCA thought BTIKM was going to be another WWFM. It made sense and looked good on paper, but it didn't work like they wanted it to. :( How do we know this? Are you assuming this or do we know that Adam is doing this at each radio station? I really hope this is a part of this radio tour! |
