Any ATopian looking for a topic for a masters or doctoral thesis? Or know someone who is? May I suggest Adamtopia. One could pursue any of a number of themes. The obvious, of course, is the obsession and passion of Adam's fans, and the incredibly wide demographic. But think about the other possibilities:
1. Our public v. private v. anonymous internet selves 2. The culture of an internet forum 3. The revealing nature of discussions by women from 20-80 regarding penises, their state of excitement, their size and shape, their attraction or lack of attraction, and the other parts of Adam's anatomy that women find attractive and arousing. 4. Sociolinguistics: how we say, what we say, what is appropriate, what is offensive, what is acceptable grammar, acceptable topics of discussion and how that varies among members from different countries, different ages, different backgrounds. 5. The hierarchy on a discussion board. Who has the power? How is it used? The individual v. the collective? The freedom of expression v. the desire to arrive at consensus? 6. Establishing and building real life relationships and connections in the virtual world.
And on, and on. Adamtopia is frequently informative, often amusing, sometimes profound, sometimes banal, occasionally offensive, occasionally contentious and argumentative, often remarkably kind and supportive, and for many, an important part of their daily lives. This is a goldmine for research and observation. But, maybe we shouldn't tell anyone that.
