I'm hopelessly behind and will never catch up on the thread, since I had to stan and bert on the run tonight, and now I have to pack for a weekend trip. But I thought the performance was beautiful beautiful beautiful. Very real and heartfelt. Any flaws (and I'm willing to admit it wasn't perfect) only added to the beauty of it, IMO. It's like that lyric by Leonard Cohen... "There's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." That performance was radiant with light. I love him! I agree, NoAngel. Just saw the show on TV and thought it was great! Natural and heartfelt and all WIN, perfect for the audience. The little changes, slight imperfections and more raspy tone here and there, just gave the lyrics a different flavor, but one that was equally delicious, and that some listeners, like my youngest son, probably like even better. And, he looked so stunningly beautiful that it was, even more than usual, for me, a feast for the eyes as well as for the ears. The smile that lit up Adam's face after his performance, okay, and my heart, too, LOL,was good enough by itself to make me buy whatever the man is selling. He somehow projects so much radiant joy and light in the middle of all that raw sexiness; he blows me away evertime I see him. This combination apparently sends me right down the proverbial rabbit hole, and my bet is that others will be pulled right in there with me by this accessible performance. WIN! WIN! WIN! My heart is full. ( but it still craves more, haha)

I am finally home!!! There is no way I can read this many pages so I'll just tell you all what happened that you didn't see and if it's all ready been posted, oh well. They set up for Adam during the commercial. As soon as we saw the Idol people setting up 3 stools and the drums, we knew it would be more than Monte and Adam. Monte came out first, then Isaac, then Tommy. Lots of welcoming screams from the Adam fans that were there. I'd say there were about 30 of us. Then just as the last few seconds before end of commercail, out came Adam. More screams. He waved and looked around for familiar faces as he waved. Then the beautiful rendition of Aftermath. Then the song. During commercial break, Adam talked to Ryan a bit. Randy got up and went on stage and gave Adam a big hug. Then Debbie (the stage manager) took him over to the judges table to meet JLo and Steven. They both gave him hugs and he talked to JLo very briefly. But Steven liked Adam's necklace and reached for it, was holding it in his hand and they talked about it. The photographer took a pic of Adam and Steven. Then of Adam with the 3 judges. After that, Adam went over to where the contestants were sitting and gave each and every one of them a hug. Every single one! James couldn't reach Adam well, so he jumped down off the seats to get closer. They hugged and talked a bit. The photographer took at least 3 pics of them together. Then Adam turned around and waved to the audience because he was getting lots of people calling his name. As a comparison, Diddy did not talk to the judges and did not shake hands or talk to the contestants. I was kind of surprised he didn't talk to Jennifer. I think both Aftermath and Diddy's song sounded better live than they did on TV.

Yes, I love that he is so considerate. But I think the major factor in the decision was the performance. I think he wanted to provide a somewhat fuller, more layered sound while still keeping it stripped down. True but he could have done that with a guitar and drums too. I think it was the addition of the bass that made me think he may have wanted to do something for his band as well. I'm not usually one to prescribe more generous motives to Adam's decisions when there are more practical motives at hand but for some reason I did with this one. You might be right and it would be so much like Adam. But I still lean towards performance reasons. I think he wanted to hit the right balance for the Idol stage. What works on Ellen might not work on a much bigger stage like Idol. Or I am just biased because I prefer the accoustic performances where the full band is present - like FS WLL or the whole VH1 unplugged series. I just like the more complex, layered sound.
