Does anybody know whether the number of singles from one studio album is limited? Or how many singles could Adam potentially release from Trespassing? Thanks in advance Singles do not need to be from albums, but since the 1960's usually are. The number of non-album singles is growing because of digital. In addition, many singles are from EP's vs. albums.
In the digital world there is no longer any standard definition of a single but I have used the definition that a single is a single song track that is released separately from an album either as a non-album single or as an album single.
Artists have released ever track on a album as singles -- so I am changing the questions to singles released to radio.
Of major artists, I believe Michael Jackson has the record for the most singles from an album --
Michael Jackson "Thriller" - 7 singles; "Bad" - 9 singles, "Dangerous" - 9 singles.
In 2012 --- there are a few major artists with 5 singles from one album --- one example - Lil Wayne has 5 from Carter IV (2012).
Katy Perry has 7 singles -- so far -- from "Teenage Dream" -- with 6 #1's and a #3 they are prob not done.
---
Generally, a US Major Label artist will get 2 singles from an album released to radio and if they have a hit -- they will get more. But if there are 2 misses, and the label still thinks the artist has commercial potential, they sometimes move to a non-album single. The promotional cost of promoting an album to radio is very high and the artist pays a large part of it out of their royalties -- so they actually have some role in deciding about single #3.
If this doesn't make sense that means you get it. It makes no sense. Since everything is digital, and you can buy just one track, the "single" is a somewhat obsolete.
I know it's still way too early to talk about Adam's third single, but are you saying that if NCOE turns out to be a miss as a single ( which is highly unlikely, imo) and BTIKM didn't do well, there's a possibility that Adam will have a non-album single for his third which he would fund from his own royalties?
And what is a miss? Was BTIKM a miss as a single?
At this point I think it would be fair to presume that Trespassing will be the third single, since it's a title track, wouldn't it?
But in case of that two-misses scenario, I wonder what song he would choose for #3. Because he does have the commercial potential, right? I mean, there IS going to be a single #3?
