Is anybody else put off by comments like,"I am pretty sure he/she is gay"? Is there some sort of checklist of the requirements for which we can judge and then label people? It sounds like, "if he/she acts ______way then he/she must be_____." For me, if you don't catch them in the act, or hear it from their lips then I think assuming you know is perpetuating stereotyping. I completely agree with Kay, and I wish people would stop doing that, because that's why some men are afraid of exploring/showing their less masculine side, so as not to be labelled 'not straight'. I have come across very 'feminine' guys and 'masculine' women in my life who were not gay and I think it's just not right to assume anyone's sexual orientation. Take Tommy, for example. He's straight, but apparently he pinged many people's gaydar, quite wrongly. I didn't have a clue Adam was gay when I watched AI. It didn't even cross my mind. I was surprised when I read the RS article and he said something like it wasn't a surprise for anyone to learn that... Well, it was for me. So these gaydar thingies are often wrong, I guess. That's why we shouldn't use them. |
