Trespassing, Judo and Finding Your Way

When I read Trespassing liner notes and lyrics, it was a surprisingly powerful experience. When I reached the conclusion of Adam’s “thank you’s” on Trespassing, I thought of two unrelated things – Judo and the Tao Te Ching. I am certain that Adam was not thinking of either when he wrote these words….
"Lastly I want to thank anyone who ever told me NO. Anyone whoever dissed me or judged me. You give these songs the air to make fire. Turn it up and let the liberation burn!"

Occasionally, when things pop in my head, I take the time to stop and think about why they arrived. Yesterday, I stopped and thought about the why?
Why judo? Judo (Japanese for "the gentle way") emphasizes winning in combat by using your opponent's weight and strength as weapons against him. Adam clearly was inspired by people who told him to give up, surrender, and just plain NO. The parallel is simple.
The bigger question was why I thought of this section of the Tao Te Ching?
“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.”
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
Look at the lyrics, read the thank you message, listen to the music. Adam is on a path to mastering his true power. And we are lucky to get to be a small part of it.
As we head toward the album release and the crush of numbers, I have a small piece of advice. Do not confuse sales units with success. Do not even think that critical acclaim is success. For this album, I would be forward a new measure of success -- does it effect people? Does this album make you and the people you know want to dance and touch your heart. If it does, they it is a success.
Lao Tzu wrote, "If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich." I will put forward my own version of that wise statement albeit not as poetic or wise. "If fans love the music and Adam loves the music, we are truly rich." It is enough.

Thank you first and foremost to my laptop which has enabled me to take this incredible journey. Because of your roomy hard drive I have been able to save countless photos, none of which are of my family. Thanks for magically knowing my favorite sites, and for defaulting to English-to-Finnish on Google Translate.
Sauli- thanks for providing diversion and entertainment while Adam was busy ignoring us. Mixed feelings here, since it think you may have had just a teeeeny bit to do with how long it's taken to get this album, but you're forgiven since you make Adam so happy.
Hugs to my family of friends I've met in the past 3 years, and to friends I haven't met yet and only know by their weird online names. Thanks for keeping me company in the good times and bad, no matter what time of day. Also props to all the crazy fans for making me feel boring and normal!
To all the music people who have berted to us while we waited for the album and told us how much fun you were having and how great Adam was sounding and how we were gonna be so happy someday soon. Hmmm, now that I read that back, never mind, I don't like you people after all. >:(
Lots of gratitude to the fandom ninjas who got us through the times of drought by taking the tiniest scrap of information and giving us every single possible detail complete with footnotes, references, and diagrams.

Thank you, Adam's hair, for being endlessly entertaining even when it hurt my eyes to look at it.
