I'm posting this here because I know a couple of the commenters go here. To those leaving comments on The Village Voice article saying "Why does it matter if he's gay?" Firstly, do you even know what The Village Voice is? Secondly, that 5-page article off the back of the release of his album is major promo in NYC.
Please stop telling publications with large gay readerships that it doesn't matter if Adam is gay. It DOES matter to those of us in the gay community. A huge amount as it happens. To have an out mainstream artist like him is incredibly important and to have a publication like the Village Voice on side is a major coup. Those comments you people leave places are insulting beyond belief to both us and to Adam.
I imagine this will be the last comment I leave before I get banned for posting this but hopefully some of you will think before you post in future.
I realize this does not apply to everyone here by all means by the way but there are people here are repeat offenders on this front.
This is not an article in The Village Voice -- it is a blog on The Village Voice website. A bit different.
But I agree --- if Adam can get the Billboard 200 #1 album, it will be a milestone that should not pass without notice. To quote the blogger:
"Why am I proposing we shell out hard cash for this frothy and reportedly fun pop disc, which is as light and apolitical as Bridesmaids was? Because in the nearly 60-year history of the weekly Billboard album chart, no single-artist title credited to an out gay performer has ever been our No. 1 album. (Nope, not him. Or him, either. Or her.)
The key word in the above sentence is, of course, out. Numerous artists who have emerged from the closet in the last few decades, as the gay-rights movement has come out of the shadows, have topped the album chart. But crucially, not a one of them did so while fully public about his or her sexual orientation."

The problem I have with this article, it that the writer has little or no familiarity with Adam's music and refers to the album as "light" and "apolitical". Clearly he has not even listened to Trespassing and OOL.
If this album opens at #1, it will be a milestone NOT just because Adam is gay, but because this album is a by an openly gay artist whose life and quest for love and acceptance is the core message of the album. It is honest, not "frothy".
And it will be a milestone on its own terms as a great album by an artist.
My suggestion is that writers should listen to an album before they attempt to characterize it.
You're right Q3 I felt the same way.. Trespassing is not a light album by any means.. In a way I'm happy that it was portrayed as such for now. The beginning is full of joy but when we go deeper it is filled with depth and pain. . come in if you dare. .. I think the dance music is the big seller part ... I will wait for the critics to really talk about the "Masterpiece".Just so happy blog or paper Village Voice is asking people to support the album.
