Underneath is primal for me. It pulsates in a ryhthmn of strength and vulnerability - the rhythmn of being human. Its starts on a lonely and tentative note. from which he reaches out to the Other, to another human being. Gently as an angel might - even though he is speaking about something so big, the lies that are so devastating. But then he goes right into the pain.of it. The image of everyone talking about the freak: "the outcast", he outcast is turning back to look into the eyes of those that left him behind and saying let me take you underneath Then that moving line : baby better watch your step The tone he uses in those lines - its so layered and what it perfectly conveys is a mixture of bitterness and mocking and pride and hurt and yearning and strength. The yearning and pain becomes bigger in "never mind whats on the left" - so beautifully obscure that line, telling you, to obscure the heart, but underneath asking you not to listen to that instruction ever. And then the chorus comes like a vast wave of revelation and un-recountable pain. That line black and blue sky" - its the endless sky of pain. and when he sings the depth of my sin. it just kills. In that moment he shifts his point of view into the gaze of those who have condemned him, and then he sings look at me, now do you see? thats 180 degrees back to his own point of view, his own inescapable truth. He creates a circle between himself and the other and expresses that primal human yearning in all of us: to be Seen and Loved by the another. Beautifully said! Thank you!! Thank you, thank you for your beautiful, thoughtful, painfilled words. At least now I know why I can't stop crying for my baby, Adam. That man breaks my heart. I just don't want him to feel anything but love from everyone. I wish we could all (here at Atop) put our arms around him and take it all away so that he only felt love forever more. Not possible, however, because this is life.

Are you asking what he is doing vocally that tears at your heart? Well, here is what I hear: At the very beginning, he sings very lightly, with an almost straight tone (no vibrato), adding a bit of a breathy quality. The sound is, at once, open, simple, intimate, and vulnerable. Then, the second verse, he eliminates the breathy quality and the tone gets progressively more and more piercing -- by the way he focuses his sound way up front and high in his facial mask. He also adds a squeeze to the notes by tightening the muscles in his throat (as opposed to many pop singers who get that tone by tightening up their vocal folds and forcing air thru them --- not good for the voice). You know how, when you are on the verge of tears, fighting them back, your throat tightens and almost closes off? The tone he uses evokes that feeling when you hear it. It really wails, not as in a rock wail, but as in a wailing wall wail. It really is masterful, isn't it? And, when he sings that final two phrases, he drops all tension, and his voice sounds, again, totally open and vulnerable. Thank you Cassie. Those last two phrases kill me. Every time. The beginning feels so sad and vulnerable, but I can deal with that. Then it gradually builds and when he starts sounding like he's holding back tears, my throat tightens in response and I start to tense up. But I'm still sorta keeping it together. Right up to the final "Welcome to my world of truth". And that's when I lose my shit altogether. Just something about the way he sings those lines and the contrast with what came before. Exactly the way you described it, the open and vulnerable tone. So brave, so honest, so sad, almost like a gentle plea. And it gets me. Every. Single. Time. It hits hard. Every. Time. He's so brave. But I can't fathom how he's going to be able to perform that live... and still continue singing something else... with his heart ripped out and left on the stage... Will be so powerful and gutwrenching. I want it, but I'm not sure I can handle it...

The reason I love Underneath so much is because I think that's the song where Adam bares his soul most, wears his heart upon the sleeve.
He pleads there, and you can't say how much from the lyrics only, you have to listen to the song....
By the end, he begs ... " I'm standing here with no apologies... DO YOU SEE UNDERNEATH... WELCOME TO MY WORLD OF TRUTH ... LOOK AT ME, DO YOU SEE, LOOK AT ME, DO YOU SEE... I DON'T WANNA HIDE ANY PART OF ME FROM YOU."
I didn't expect to love them all this much. Runnin and Nirvana are fantastic. Outlaws of Love has been unrightfully neglected in the pre-release discussions. Heart-breaking. Perfect.
I still don't get Kickin In. The only song I didn't transfer to my phone.
The album is testimonial.
ETA LOL Anjalee, I second everything you said about Underneath!!! I can't bring myself to write anything, I have such a massive headache, pretending to be normal in the outside world, like nothing's happening when everything is, is not easy at all.
