US radio and US RCA strategy this era baffles me.

I'm living for the amazing Queen stuff right now I almost wonder if RCA should have just waited to release Trespassing until September---the Queen concerts would be done (hopefully creating good buzz for Adam), Adam would have the time to really promote his own stuff, Holiday sales would be on the horizon (rather than the "dead months" of summer), and--maybe--the UK would be leading the way this time. I will admit to being a tiny bit nervous. Trespassing may very well fall out of the BB 200 in the next 2-3 weeks. I hope his label still has his back. I honestly don't know how the bottom fell out so quickly. And I can't help it, I am worried about RCA standing behind him.

Can you imagine how despondent we'd feel if we didn't have the incredible Queen stuff and the great reception Adam's getting? Speaking for myself - it's helping to keep MY despondency at bay.
But I still return to :dunno: whenever I let myself think about US radio & RCA. Unfathomable actually.

And I can't help it, I am worried about RCA standing behind him. The bottom fell out because there was no radio exposure past the #18 BTIKM which precipitated no radio play for NCOE. Nothing is going to sell without radio in his genre with his name, not a "Barbara Streisand" etc. Further, at least 13 reality show contestants, of which he is one, hit the charts with NCOE at one time, around 8 of them American Idols. OF that 13, several had hits in Canada/UK. And were cross promoted as in 1D with Olly Murs on their coattails. He had a chance to top some of them if he was in power rotation but that never happened. They've moved on. Radio, regardless of Adam specific bias or not is NEVER going to load up CHR/HAC with 13 songs of the same category, and play reality star contestants back to back. And even if they let them enter, they're not going to go past the low peak positions, as we just saw, and even with Daughtry, who's time has passed. He's in a worse position because he's got NOTHING "new" to offer. This business about him having enough fans to keep him afloat is nonsense, IMO. We won't even talk about the song(s). They either resonate or don't with radio establishment. NOT that I believe ANY Trespassing song would have worked for Adam in this confluence of events unless they PLAY THE HELL OUT OF IT. So thank you Chris, Haley, Kris, and all the rest for blocking the slot and failing anyway. Z100 never added NCOE but were the first to add Murs because he is opening for 1D There was obviously some hanky panky going on when RCA had a false banner claiming "early adders" for z100 which became a NO-ADDER and Q which became an auto adder. Some kind of perceived "deal" didn't pan out. Shock RCA, OFTEN incompetent dopes, imo. I give you Aaron Hicklin's potential destruction of one Adam Lambert for the FUBAR by Roger Widynowski. And this is precisely why this thread was created, no? Because the facts of the situation were unacceptably "gloomy" and we were to wait the requisite 5 months and watch magic happen like with WWFM. The only questions remaining are: what was his deal with RCA, is he actually "in development" and how much is their P&L showing for expense versus revenue. How much does he "cost" and how much is he going to bring in. These factors will determine his future with that label IMO. If he can continue to sell acceptable units of Trespassing every week, that's something. He's still hanging on Billboard 200 at #115 with $4,000 units sold. (bleak 22% drop, tho, you're right) DMG is sort of irrelevant, they could be working on contingency and his marketing PR is free until he breaks at whatever level he and they agreed to. I personally feel RCA would look like fools to drop him considering his status of superstar who doesn't get radio (for lack of a better term) but it's possible they couldn't care less how they look even when their roster of signed artists isn't exactly burning up the charts either. Usher broke with 129K??? REally? But he's getting the airplay to drive sales and has a huge name compared to Adam, he's still selling plenty. Dropped or not dropped I don't think it will be any time soon, and for now his life is going to be much harder looking at the potential career of being a touring act instead of comfortably sitting home counting his money, creating new music while living on sales, and turning out a 3rd album not under the pressure of doing shows. Hopefully Queen will pay off in that department, his advance and indenture from RCA paid off, and he somehow scores some more super expensive gigs to put him in a better position. And it IS always possible he breaks in Europe and re-enters the charts here. I guess. That UK release date is going to be a day I'm not looking forward to in the least because his exposure was SUPER EXCELLENT and could not have been much better..except for the stupid GN show cock blocking his small chance at an interview with the masturbating in a tree tale.

I was happy that you posted this recently. I just went over his sales compared to other idols and he was at #13. Sales of aprox.131,000 for his IMHO terrific Trespassing, seems pretty awful. I wonder how overseas sales will affect the outcome, including, Great Britain, Japan, etc. Also Is it true that the way singers really make their money today is through concerts and merchandise, rather than record sales? I keep reading that there isn't that much profit for the artists in selling cds... mostly because of free downloading. Why oh why did Adam give away most of his album away for free downloading?? This radio stuff seems so depressing,I have to say that I keep hearing that many people don't listen to radio... this seems hard to believe. Adam is best as a live performer in my opinion, but it doesn't seem easy to be on the road constantly. I'm so excited about Queen and so distressed at radio.. up down, up down...Happy,sad, feeling kind of split in half emotionally.

Well I didn't know his sales ranking and I don't know cuts on CD sales but yeah, that's what I heard - touring is the money. I remember him saying he hoped to play bigger venues than last era - when releasing Trespassing. Personally, I can see him being "over it" if Trespassing is a failed era for lack of a better term but I don't exactly see him out on the road 300 days a year either. So your guess is as good as mine If he pulls in a big payday for a bunch of Queen concerts, it should cushion him for awhile till regrouping I'd say. What regrouping actually means, I have no clue. Maybe splitting with RCA to a smaller label with lower demands (IF RCA has higher ones). ETA: My family owns a record label and the merch getting to the venue is super important. It is not a radio charting label so it's different but if we fail to get the merch there it's a huge contract violation. It's half the reason the artists sign, for internet downloads, getting them booked and at the venue promptly and MERCH! Sometimes they don't even care about one or the other of the three but need an outlet for one of the issues. Like they don't want to be bothered with touring drama and want someone else to facilitate it so they don't miss the plane LOL. So yes I would assume it's the same way for a huge label. In fact we have a partner agreement with one of the top 2 labels (I can't say which one) for distribution because it's so important.

He had to grow up fast and grew titanium balls that carried him through. AND being smart and likable are great traits when negotiating. I can even see him having given up ALOT of his points for the relationship of longevity. Writing royalties, sales etc.

RCA just doesn't appear to be making an effort. RCA Promo's twitter account hasn't even tweeted about the Queen gigs. Not one word. Brian May's website and twitter account have done more promotion than RCA has. Queen is selling Adam's CD's at their shows. I mean, look at all the free promotion Queen is doing for RCA. Any smart businessmen would pick that up and run with it, not RCA. As far as the other Idols fighting for those spots on radio, it's all about how much muscle the label is willing to put behind the promotion. Simon Cowell is even on Twitter promoting his artists. He's the head of the company out there promoting his own artists. He wants to see them succeed, not to mention his financial stake in their success. That Billboard article that came out that everyone was so excited with the RCA bigwig going on about "developing" Adam and what big plans they had for him. I don't know, it just seemed to be a bunch of smoke they were blowing. It just seemed like corporate lip service cause they certainly haven't seemed to put much muscle behind getting Adam on the radio. All I know is that I look at all of the artists who have come through my hometown of Dallas and visited our local CHR/HAC stations, all of the ones for the past 6 months. They're all getting major airplay, except for Adam. Only a handful of stations gave Adam significant airplay out of the ones he visited. I don't know what the answer is. If RCA is not willing to invest money and muscle into making Adam a success, what's their point?
