^^^^^ This. There is definitely an element about song selection and promotion strategies. In Australia, with an entirely different social and political landscape to the US, not many casual Adam fans that I talk to even know that Trespassing has been released. Radio has ignored both singles. I have not heard them played on any station I listen to, that are still playing WWFM and IIHY regularly. FYE cycle, radio here was very willing to play his songs on their merits. Trespassing entered the charts and peaked at No.9, disappearing a couple of weeks later - there was very little to back up the release, his hard core fans bought the album and he had no way of picking up new ones. Adam was very clear at the start that he would not be touring immediately because he wanted to "fully support" the promotion of his singles, and his management has said that their strategy is focussed on using Adam himself - getting him in front of as many people as possible. There is only one of him, and he is very focussed on breaking the UK market. I think the delay of the release of Trespassing was a conscious timing, in part, closer to the UK release date for that very reason - so he could get the No.1 spot in the US, which would give him a natural momentum, credibility and headlines into the UK market, which is exactly what has happened. If this is reasonable speculation, then it seems that in this era they may be trying to follow a path of least resistance across the globe. It was very lucrative last time. From the numbers I have seen, his international sales (without any UK success) were roughly equal to what he sold in the States, album wise, if I remember correctly. If he can get those numbers without too much bother, why wouldn't he. Adam's mentioned that he'll be coming to Australia in a few months time to push things along no doubt. Last time, his notoriety from the AMAs, together with a promotional visit and songs that "connected" were all that it took to get things moving here and spectacularly in New Zealand. I remembered posting about the situation in Australia a while ago using an Australian blog that wrote about is as proof, and someone here not only called that music blog a non-existent one, but she called me a doom and gloom poster. I am happy therefore that an Aussie glambert is doing the revealing now. Just like I said last time using that blog post as a proof, some countries watch out for what is being played on American radio to draw up their playlists. I am very sure he would be enjoying AirPlay in Aussie if he was charting here. WWFM was promoted in Aussie only after it became a hit here and they pretty much jumped on the wagon knowing he was popular in the US then. I don't personality believe the songs are the issue since the boring Kelly's first single was a no.1 hit there. It is about wanting to play artists the US tell them are the cool ones to have. Some European countries which played him first era are also doing this. His only hope of being able to chart in those countries again is if he gets a hit in the UK.

If one listens to the words on a number of songs on Trespassing, like the title song, you will note how Adam feels. To wit Trespassing.. where is Adam trespassing? Underneath... When the smile is gone.. How does he feel? Outlaws of Love.. who are the outlaws. When Adam has said that he hasn't made any good singer friends in the music business,( katy Perry ?). He said it was like a political decision to be friendly with him.. I'm paraphrasing,I can't find the direct quote. Yes precisely! He gave all these hints himself and indicated that was why he wrot the song 'Trespassing' and why he chose it as the album title track. I would take his words anyday over some fans' view of the situation.

He also did whole lot of promo in Australia last era. He has done none so far this time. I am worried that by the time he actually starts doing International promo it will be too late in some countries. And while I am excited for the Queen concerts, at the moment I feel like it is killing his album. He dropped Trespassing, and he has no visibility anywhere promoting this album.

If RCA continues to support and push an album that has dropped out of the BB200 it will be pretty unusual. I think the 2013 talk came with the assumption that there would be hit songs to promote.
If RCA was planning on having the album "take off" after Queen and the UK, then they would have waited to release in September.

And while I am excited for the Queen concerts, at the moment I feel like it is killing his album. He dropped Trespassing, and he has no visibility anywhere promoting this album. I asked this before: What do you think he should be doing promoting his album that he has not done yet? The exposure he is getting working with Queen is an opportunity that NO other American artist can even dream of. It is world wide, it brings non-pop people to take a notice or at least to learn his name. Brian and Roger and associated sites are being MORE than supportive - they are in fact blowing all the possible horns, mentioning Adam's solo career and his album on the way... If Queen is not enough - Russia added Zemphira to the bill - which in itself is a definite win for Adam. She is apparently huge in Russia and will attract people that might not be interested in Queen, and I bet have never heard of Mr Lambert. These people will be there for Zemphira and they will discover Adam. Same with Kiev and Elton John and the whole EU football finals crowd. WHAT ELSE COULD HAVE GIVEN ADAM THIS KIND OF EXPOSURE???? People are curious, many people will go and research and google and YT. They will find EMAs, but they will also find - Adam's body of work, both for FYE and TP. Media will be all over the events. My hope is that the TP the album will be sold at the merch stands at these concerts. I hope this was negotiated. There is a big world out there. Let EU and Asia take the lead. His path is unique, his talents are unique. Adam will prevail DESPITE the US radio and the RCA cowards.

Is it safe to presume RCA has considered a double single flop case scenario and has a strategy in that case?
I agree with the person who said that pushing a third single now would be a sacrifice of a perfectly good song . Also, I don't think that just ANY other song from TP apart from BTIKM and NCOE would have made a better single. They may be much better songs, but not necessarily better singles. NCOE is good, but not good ENOUGH. It would be good enough if someone else sang it.
Homophobic or not, radio won't play his song unless he makes an epic hit. In other words, his path is always a more difficult one than it is for the others. An average artist makes an average song and he gets spins. Adam has to kill it, just like he did on AI, to be so much better than all the others and then some, in order to reach the second place.
All the post idol talk of what he did on the show, the insinuations which go on even today about how much better he was and is than KA... are just dust in the wind. They offer some solace to Adam and his fans that the truth is known, but at the same time are a bitter reminder of how much more effort Adam has to put in to achieve his goals.
No matter how loud one wants to scream Injustice! because of that, it has one bright side to it: it makes Adam work harder and strive to be more ( perfect, excellent? you can't compare those, lol)... everything in what he does.
He is so unapologetically himself on TP: sass, fierceness, gayness, sex, drugs, alcohol, partying, are all sang about in a very 'joie de vivre', 'carpe diem' , 'i'll sleep when i'm dead', 'this is me, take it or leave it' way, not the 'sin is in' way, just to be clear... I think that some fans dislike NCOE not because it's a bad song, but because Adam ( i.e. RCA) seemed to try to achieve a compromise with it, offer radio a 'politically/ socially correct' version of himself... and radio seems to refuse even that gloved hand...
The combination of that compromise with the fact that epic songs on TP have been disregarded because of that plus the fact that even that wasn't enough has created this feeling of discontent among his fans.
So, I think that the combination of NCOE's averageness and the fact Adam sings it is the reason of its poor radio performance.
A clarification on 'Adam sings it' : it's not only because he is gay. I think that there is some kind of jealousy when he is concerned on behalf of his colleagues. The effect of this on radio is something on the line : if he is so great, where is that great song? When he makes it, we'll play it. NCOE is just not great. Shady is, but Shady talks about one night hook ups and picking up a boy in a gay bar, so.... I'm so sorry Shady hadn't been released instead of NCOE.
To return to the RCA strategy: they released NCOE and Adam went to Europe. So, what to think:
~ if it was meant to be a hit, it would / will be exactly that, Adam wanted to sing for Queen and now is the perfect time for it, there's not much we/he can do now?
or
~ NCOE isn't doing well, he better get his ass back to US and do ... more promo/tv appearances, because he'll never get the third single after two flops?
Idk. The two questions that interest me most personally are:
1. Does RCA have a strategy in this two single flop case scenario and what would it be? Is there going to be a third single?
2. Is it too early or even downright ridiculous to presume that NCOE is/ will be a flop as a single, based on the situation so far? I know nothing about radio, but if that were true, then it's really not fair from us to 'doom and gloom'. Idk.
I honestly think that, no matter how hurt/ disappointed Adam may be about all this, he cannot be surprised... Therefore, he can probably genuinely enjoy his time with Queen / critical acclaim TP got / thriving love life... and not think too hard about the future. He'll cross those bridges when he gets to them.
I apologize for any spelling/ grammar/ radio / data ... kind of mistakes.
KEEP ON VOTING.
PS - Two things that would disappoint me immensely:
1. if Adam doesn't get to release the third single (oh, horror!)
2. if Trespassing doesn't get any awards as an album if ( because) it failed to produce a hit single ( oh, what an injustice that would be!)

I don't know, in most cases, I think, the strategy for 2 flopped singles would be: new project. Or, take some time to go back to the drawing board to figure out where to go from here.
What would Adam be doing promo-wise if he was in the US? Showing up on TV, hitting CHR stations (including new ones he didn't visit before), booking more summer radio festivals, meeting up with Nile and Sam, going to Australia and New Zealand and spending more time in Canada, being VISIBLE. The best time for promo opportunities is in the early weeks of an album drop (apart from award show time). Adam is with a very good management company---the wouldn't have him sitting around.
I am excited for Queen. But, as it gets closer I am waiting to see just how much exposure and buzz it will get Adam. Or, will it be the right kind of exposure he needs at the moment to advance his own project. Obviously, this must be a dream for him, so I am happy. And I hope it gets big press in the UK and Europe. But, I think the timing could have been a bit better (although that's not in his hands)

Nica, lovely post!!!
Guys, could it be that it would be better for Adam NOT to release the third single?
If he does, and it doesn't do well for any kind of imaginable or unimaginable reasons, TP will be known as an album which failed to produce a hit.
If that happens, we will LOSE that comfort or privilege of claiming that BTIKM and NCOE radio failure is due to the fact they are not the best songs on the album. Because if RCA releases Cuckoo or Shady, both UNDENIABLY PHENOMENAL SONGS, and radio doesn't play, we/Adam/RCA will know for sure that it's personal. Things could get very ugly.
Could it be that it would be much harder for the third single to succeed after the possible case of two consecutive flops?
Maybe it would be best to focus on TP as an album in all ways possible and refocus from radio for a while, in case NCOE doesn't do better on radio, that is.
ETA But Bullsfan, he's already done so much promo and nada. Where does one stop? I'm not saying the Queen thing hasn't caused some sacrifices, but the benefits outweigh them by far, I think... So much exposure... such an honour and privilege...

Max @maxwellshouse @q102 just played NCOE! I sent him a thank you tweet. Even though NCOE most likely won't be on the countdown, it's great to hear it in prime time. It's pretty sad (and indicative of how bad things are) that we have to excitedly post a single spin. NOT BEING CRITICAL - I DO THE VERY SAME SAME THING! Just musing....
