was checking out the leamington post in Canada since i will be heading that way this weekend. They had an article about adam kicking Adele out of the number one spot on there website... "He may not have won season eight of “American Idol,” but glam superstar Adam Lambert’s sophomore album “Trespassing” had enough steam behind it to claim the top spot on the Canadian album chart this week." read the rest at the link below. www.leamingtonpostandshopper.com/2012/05/23/adam-lambert-boots-adele-from-no-1Oh and there is a poll too :D

I realize Billboard is an industry magazine and just being factual in reporting Adam's numbers. The number of records sold these days is so low in general compared to the old days. Some other outlets have picked it up and yes in the case of some I think they have a motive for wanting to diminish Adam's achievement, to take something special and make it seem small and ordinary. I love that Adam got #1, but Adam's story is not found in statistics. Adam is not only a great singer and performer, he is a great person, willing to endure personal sacrifices and face extraordinary scrutiny in the face of homophobia and judgment. Every time his name and face appear he faces all kinds of name-calling. He faces a climate where some listeners consider a gay person singing a song to be a political statement and some radio stations are cowardly about facing their ire. This #1 is very important because Adam is building his career and life with his voice, his brain, and his reputation, all while fighting injustice and the fact that some in the industry hold his sexuality against him and do not want him to succeed. Amen sista

www.newnownext.com/adam-lambert-trespassing-debuts-at-1/05/2012/Adam Lambert today became the first openly gay artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 with Trespassing topping the charts. With this and his OMA nomination announced earlier today, it is a good day to be Adam. So whoever is runner-up on tonight’s American Idol finale can feel great in knowing that Lambert is everywhere, and we haven’t been hearing much from Kris Allen these days…

I think we should not underestimate the importance of radio play for continued and growing sales/success. WWFM helped make tremendous strides for Adam because of radio play which, IMO, led to his Grammy nom. Pop stars need radio play. I didn't tweet anything to Adam.. Adam is a lot smarter than I am and knows what to do.. but what if radio won't play his music?? Radio (and the rest of the entertainment industry) is soooo conservative now. It slays me. Think about the movies. The big movies are franchises based on things like comic books and Harry Potter. Movies like Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, and The Godfather wouldn't be made today, or if they were, would be low-budget affairs on a limited release. I have all my fingers and toes crossed that Q3 is right and radio play is going to kick in for NCOE starting next week. And we're getting an awesome video. Otherwise we're looking at building through word of mouth. If something is good, it will be passed onto someone else, who will recommend it to someone else. DMG seems to be doing a good job getting the word out. We'll see. Go baby go!

I have not read the thread, just a few posts --- and I am posting this to make a request. I am not interested in deleting a lot of angry posts about the Billboard article mentioning that this is the lowest #1 since last August. SO DO NOT POST THEM.
This article is not Adam-specific -- it is about the state of the music industry in an industry trade publication.[/b][/size] If you think that Billboard, or the other articles/blogs derived from this story, are being unfair or making a factually incorrect statement, then post away. But do it in a rational, intelligent and respectful manner. OR DO NOT DO IT AT ALL!!! IMO #1 is #1. If Artist A had gotten a #1 album with 77,000 units sold the article would be essentially the same. It is notable in an industry that is collapsing. An industry that saw a ray of hope with Adele's now 9X Platinum US album that maybe the old model would survive and just maybe it was the economy. Adam is an American Idol star (usually big sellers) who put out a quality album (great reviews) and has massive fan support. The promo effort was great. If it was 2008, this album would have been gold week one. But it is not 2008. The model has changed. The record business will soon join the sheet music business and they need to evolve a new model. Forget about Adam for a second -- look at Carrie's sales this week -- her first album is 8X Platinum US. This album is going to have to struggle to get to 1X Platinum US. Country fans are older and were still buying CDs. So step back from Adam fandom for a minute. Pretend you run Billboard -- a music industry trade paper. What would you write? You would not be doing your job if you did not mention the sales number in context and your boss would fire you. For a bit of context. Here is a list of the 25 lowest selling #1 album before digital conversion --- as of Nov 21, 2008 sold 390,000 units in the US in the first week. music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-extra-what-a-turkey-the-25-worst-selling-1-albums.html The current lowest selling #1 album sold 40,000 in January 2011 -- before Adele. February 2, 2011 3:45 PM ET Amos Lee Breaks Record For Lowest-Selling Number One Album Andy Kropa/Getty
Last week singer-songwriter Amos Lee scored his best-ever sales figures and highest chart placement while setting a more dubious record – his Mission Bell (Blue Note/EMI) is the latest album to be named the lowest-selling Number One since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. This record has been broken a few times in just the first month of this year, first by Taylor Swift's Speak Now and two weeks ago by Cake's Showroom of Compassion.
....
On the downside, the increasingly low bar for topping Billboard's album chart suggests that it may not mean very much to have a Number One record anymore. In cultural terms, free downloads such as mixtapes may have greater social impact. According to the Game, his mixtape Purp and Patron was downloaded over a million times last week. Since that mixtape was spread around the internet via several websites, not to mention bittorrent sites and other file-sharing methods, it's almost impossible to get an accurate sense of how many copies were downloaded. Nevertheless, if the Game's estimate is anywhere in the ballpark of the actual download figures it significantly dwarfs the number of people who paid for Lee's new record.Read more: www.rollingstone.com/music/news/amos-lee-breaks-record-for-lowest-selling-number-one-album-20110202#ixzz1vjI2Z6M9
