@villagevoice: 100 & Single: Answering Questions On Adam Lambert's Historic Chart-Topping Album blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2012/05/adam_lambert_trespassing_number_one.php100 & Single: Answering Questions On Adam Lambert's Historic Chart-Topping Album I've never been happier to be wrong about something. Two weeks ago, the last line of my column read: "Probably won't happen. But wouldn't it be fun if it did?"The event I didn't think could happen was Adam Lambert scoring a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 album chart with his second disc, Trespassing. But I sure was wrong, and it sure is fun: By reaching the penthouse, Adam becomes the first out gay artist to have the best-selling album in America. Trespassing did this by selling roughly 77,000 albums last week. What my early-May column revealed was that every prior well-known gay musician to top the big chart—Elton John, Freddie Mercury, George Michael, Ricky Martin and Clay Aiken, among others—only came out of the closet later. Since I chronicled this odd statistic, I've been (happily) inundated with comments, challenges, debates, rejoinders, retweets and attaboys. And questions—lots of questions. Since this has been my most-read and most-commented chart column by far, I thought I might address a few of these questions, as best as I can. Some of the most heated questions I received regard issues better addressed by cultural critics like Camille Paglia or Wayne Koestenbaum, not some lowly chart columnist; but I'll do my best to wade into them. Let me start with the question that is of most interest to my regular readers, who are more chart obsessives than gay-rights activists. more Really good article, and I was happy to see that a couple of people in the comments section mentioned that it would be illuminating to look at the sales numbers of albums that didn't debut at #1 because of Adele. I'm betting there are many #2 debuts with lower numbers than Trespassing that would have been #1 if you took Adele out of the equation.
I just got my new issue of Entertainment Weekly, and there is not a single mention of the reaction we know they got from Adam fans about that loathsome review of Adam's gayness Trespassing. We know they heard from many of us, so clearly they're choosing to ignore the issue. Cowards. It's a double issue, which means there won't be one next week and by the time the next issue comes out they can safely pretend that it's old news.
I'm tempted to cancel my subscription, but I probably won't. I still look forward to reading the non-Adam parts of the magazine. Today this made me laugh from The Hit List:

Random thoughts:
Thanks belle for the help with translating!!!
LOVE the laid back look this morning. That's real. Don't dress it up. Naked love bb. (well, maybe not really naked love, but if you buy that story Adam spins about the meaning of this song...)
Adam's responses on Clay will not come back to haunt him- not because Clay was rude first--but because he didn't actually say anything against Clay. You know the whole "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything". Besides, dissing Clay Aiken cannot hurt your rep! Adam was, diplomatic, but real.
Love slylar's post about the evolution of the interviewers. Awesome.
I think Sauli looks even more striking without the make-up. It's his colors that really make him gorgeous.
Freckles (and I say this as somewhat of an authority since my DH is the up-most red) are only where the sun aims down on a lot. Think about the inside of his arms. Adam has freckly shoulders because he must spend time outside without his shirt on. The rest of him--even his stomach and lower back, would most likely be pale. A whole body of freckles would be unusual and due to some serious nude sunbathing.

act.mtv.com/posts/adam-lambert-trespassing-number-1-album/?xrs=share_twitterADAM LAMBERT BECOMES FIRST OPENLY GAY MALE ARTIST TO TOP ALBUMS CHART Glamberts all over the world have broken in out celebration this week! Adam Lambert’s second album "Trespassing" debuted last week and has skyrocketed up the charts to #1 in that time. Even more exciting -- he's the first openly gay artist to top the charts! Not only is Adam insanely talented, but he is setting such a great example by showing fans that others' not-so-accepting views of his sexuality won't stop him from flaunting his talents on a world stage.Adam is the seventh "American Idol" finalist to reach #1, and the first openly gay artist...ever. This is a big moment for music history, I think! Other gay artists have hit #1 -- like Elton John and George Michael -- but while they kept their sexuality tucked away from the public. more
