NoAngel, I loved your essay. Throughout the years I've been infatuated with different genres of music-- classical, R&B, rock, bluegrass, ancient and contemporary Hawaiian, etc... And pop.
The first piece of music I actually fell in love with was, strangely enough, Beethoven's 6th Symphony. I admit it. I was a weird kid. But the music that defines most periods of my life has always been pop. Certain songs take me back immediately and viscerally to different ages, different events. I still remember the song that was playing on the radio when I felt the first rush-- and emotional intricacy-- of love. I recall the power certain songs had over me when I discovered the intensity of lust, the empowering freedom of independence.... And the pain of loss.
Pop songs have made me giddy with happiness, and so sad they brought me to tears that lasted forever-- or maybe it was just a day. Felt like forever. Those songs are like a musical diary-- personal and evocative and meaningful.
Your analysis of the power of pop is right on. It's an art form that appeals to the masses, but at its best it manages to peel off layers of emotion and experience. Being able to sing along with a catchy tune is just an added bonus.
Yes, pop music may be simple and accessible, but in its highest form-- and certainly the way Adam does it-- there is nothing simplistic about it.
