This discussion has probably run its course...I know I am hoping to lay it to bed from my perspective....I really wish I could figure out how you all are putting these quotes in so easily...I just can't seem to master that...I have not yet mastered the skill.
First...this conversational 'thread':
Winter, I used "alarm" in response to this comment with an exclamation mark afterward, which could imply playfullness.
It is really important that context be kept when replying to posts...and yes...your post was taken as playfullness. But my original disclaimer was to my suggestion that Adam may find it a tad easier to get industry respect if he had learned the piano...and that he may find that skill would/could enhance his song writing skills. that is all....not make him a better person or performer...but PERHAPS a better songwriter. Nobody called me on that and it got buried in all this talk on the lack of value of an education in general...or the tendency of scholars to be elitest.
If we apply the same standard to all, mszue's response is also values-laden, it's just not as explicit as Alexandrakv's:
I am not sure of the reason for this throwaway but hey...mea culpa...
And a complete mis-representation of the nature of intuition; equating it to shallow analytical thought and therefore an obstacle to truth itself.
Completely out of context again: this was in reference to the use of the factoid regarding reading 50,000 word articles to berate academics for their unnecessary complexity and verbosity when simplicity would be much more admirable...and that this complexity was really just a way to make themselves more important! Yikes....so I did what I expect people to do IN THIS THREAD, and that is check their facts. I knew the number was hugely wrong but I took the time to check on the submission guidelines of two very reputable journal publishers: Taylor & Francis, and SAGE. I then posted the correct maximum journal word length...your number was at least 500% off. We get very angry and superior when journalists post heresay and false innuendo and info in journals and magazines....so IMHO, we have a responsibility to aim for accuracy ourselves.
So, "fuzzy thinking" all round? No, just people who are not experts on everything expressing themselves on a public forum for a pop star.
Please....when we use terms like 'fuzzy' thinking...it is not about having to be an expert...only about being a tad more precise than is the concern of the main thread. As I shot off on just now...the number 50,000 is/was a very fuzzy number.
There are [according to the front page of Adamtopia under Statistics] 1,000 "subjects" on this site. Only two actually claim to be looking for precise or deep thoughtfullness and understanding. One of those is the Numbers thread, and the other is the Moongarden. I do not like dealing in stats and 'numbers' so I never go there...ever...I believe I have accidentally wandered there once or twice, max, and have never posted there because I just do not feel 'adequate' in my stats abilities. But I do love delving into the deep waters of the Moongarden and post here stuff that few want to read. We all have our places in the grand scheme of things. I have NEVER said my way was better than anyone elses...I have defended my preferences in the face of others claiming that my way was not as legitimate as theirs...that is all. If someone wants to challenge my ideas...and I love it when the do, I do demand they give good and sufficient reasons for their ideas and when they give those good reasons...I happily admit their point. See my conversations with Mika for proofs of that.
As a point of atop history...the main thread used to include all three of these diverse threads...news, numbers and moon-y stuff. It was delightfull....we number phobes were forced to learn a bit about how the industry got its information and digested it, we had all the latest news and shallow end flailing, and we got some serious discussions...all happening at the same time. I miss that very much. I do not like being sequestered away. However, it is what it is and so we live within the parameters of Q3's will.
Any and everybody is welcome on every thread...but if Mika started posting poetry on the numbers thread, or if I started pontificating on emotional labour there....we would be unceremoniously booted out or ignored, I am sure.
Is this what we want? How dull :-[
I agree....some of our discussions here will look very dull to many on this forum. Frankly, I find the numbers thread dull.....to each their own...:-)
Junie, I wasn't calling out anything really. Just saying it how I see it at the time. Glad it helped, but Mika named it a few pages back with his reference to "either/or" thinking. Repetition helps ;D
I don't actually think of it as BLACK or WHITE....but it's all good.....
First...this conversational 'thread':
.... I am now going to state something downright sacrilegious .... now you can all beat up on me....sigh....if you want I will even remove my post.

Yeah, nikki. You have called us out on black and white thinking. So right. Junie, I wasn't calling out anything really. Just saying it how I see it at the time. Glad it helped, but Mika named it a few pages back with his reference to "either/or" thinking. Repetition helps ;D
