A few thoughts about Kiev

This brief post-show recap from Brian May has to make any Adam fan smile….



As the videos swirl around cyberspace, people are realizing something different is going on. It has taken me a day or so to start to sort out the phenomenon I prefer to call Queenbert. I think I now understand what Brian May and Adam have been promising.

I am sure there are many reactions but for me this is not Queen with just another stand-in. There is a different kind of energy between Adam and Brian and Roger and the audience. There was something new and joyful in the Kiev performance.

Brian May promised that we would hear Adam as we never heard him before. He was right.

Adam talked about this concert in a number of interviews. He talked about his respect for Freddie and his desire to balance interpreting the music for his own voice while not stray too far from the original. He was right, too.

The Guardian (UK) reported on June 4th that Adam Lambert was not overawed by the challenge. "I've sung other people's music all my life. It's what I did on American Idol, and I think one of the things I was known for was making them my own. I am incredibly inspired by Freddie Mercury, and there are things you can't not do when you're singing one of his songs because they are part of the song, and he wrote those songs with the boys. I find my own moments though."
In the VH1 Radio Classic Rock Report on June 13th he said, "I'm up there with the people who wrote these songs and I'm their guest so I intend to treat this opportunity with respect and dignity. I don't want to let anybody down, but it's also important for me not to mimic and a bad impression of Freddie Mercury would be really tacky. It's a balancing act - interpreting it for my own voice, but not straying too far from the original and not copying it."

Adam has spoken eloquently about this collaboration. Some interview adding a bit more or bringing a new insight. Of all the interviews, I think Adam really captured it when he said this…



I can’t wait to see how the rest of these concerts unfold. I am certain that more glorious surprises await!

What else does the universe has in store for Adam? Now doubt he was a global star in Kiev. And isn't it ironic that he has a astrophysicist at his side for this chapter in the Amazing Adventures of Adam Lambert.

Adam Lambert kicked off his long-awaited mini-tour with Queen last night, serving as frontman for the band at Independence Square in Kiev, Ukraine. They performed a two-hour set in the Euro 2012 fan zone as part of joint concert with Elton John to benefit the Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation. Lambert, who first performed with Queen as a contestant on American Idol and joined them for several songs at the 2011 MTV European Music Awards, had planned to perform with his idols at the U.K. Sonisphere Festival before the event was canceled in March. The pairing head next to Russia for a July 3rd concert at the Olympic Arena in Moscow.

Lambert joined Queen stars Brian May and Roger Taylor and the Rocket Man to perform in the Euro 2012 fan zone in Kiev and donated their fees to local Aids research charities.

Queen's former frontman Freddie Mercury died from the disease in 1991.

Sir Elton took a moment during his set to urge fans to stand up to violence against homosexuals in the Ukraine, after the organisers of a planned gay pride march were beaten up in May (12).

Lambert has been recruited by May and Taylor to front the new-look Queen for several dates this year (12).
