"No one can replace Freddie Mercury," "this is no longer Queen" - such comments can be read on the internet. But we have a recording from less than a week before the concert - Queen played on 30 June in Kiev - which shows that May and Taylor knew well what they were doing, inviting the American to work together.
His experiences shared with us Thomas Wiercioch from Slupsk, 28-year-old, whom the Queen has accompanied for two-thirds of his life. - When I was nine, Dad was repairing the CD player. He played "Innuendo" to check whether it worked. And so this all for me began - says Wiercioch. - Today I collect vinyl records, interesting facts connected with the band, I examine the details of the biography of the musicians, even visited their private properties.
He is a member of the official international fan club team, co-organizing meetings of fans in the New Town Lubawskie. On one of them he met the long-time assistant of Freddie - Peter Freestone, for this year, in July there will be Jim Jenkins, the official biographer of the British. Wiercioch also designed the official jersey of last year's London concert "Tribute to Freddie Mercury" - Queen fills every day of my life.
So Thomas could not miss Kiev. The musicians played there for Ukrainian AntiAids foundation (there was also Elton John). More than 20 hours on the bus, five hours of waiting, two-hour concert of idols, and again 20 hours in a bus - the trip was with my friend Maciek Kuszlewicz, also a big fan of this formation. - Paid off, we were only a few meters away from the scene - he says.
Until recently, Thomas was a bitter opponent of the Queen with Lambert - I do not like his music, for me it is a creation of American pop culture, a few months ago in an interview he did not remember the name of Queen guitarist - he says. That was until now.
- In Kiev, he surprised me with a great preparation, style and the fact that he did not copy Mercury - he says.
According to Thomas, Lambert is like Freddie very theatrical on stage, but he also connects to the vocal and sometimes - sings differently, and really very good, he has also added cool energy to them on stage.
Wiercioch can make a comparison, because he was on several shows in 2005 and 2008, when Queen sang with Queen Paul Rogers. - It was a meeting of great legends, even the songs they played with Rogers - he recalls. - With Lambert this sounds more "team". I still will not reach for his solo discs, but I admit that I liked well as he sang, and acted on the stage.
The concert has surprised Thomas in many respects. - There were many flavors, such as songs from the first and second albums, changed arrangements, interesting vocals from May and Taylor and two percussionists on stage - he says. The second one was the son of Roger, Rufus. - When Taylor goes to center stage and sings "A Kind Of Magic," his son sits behind his kit. This sounds very cool, just like their joint solo - live in Kiev, says Thomas Wiercioch.
Of course, the screen shows Freddie, not the lack of the band's biggest hits. Important, however, is that Taylor and May are still in good shape, and Lambert has passed the test. - Of course I'll be in Wroclaw, and that right under the stage - declares Tomek - after what I saw in Kiev, I'm sure it will be a great concert.
