Rock It (Prime Jive)
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - lead and backing vocals, drums, bass guitar (?), guitar, synthesizer
Freddie Mercury - intro and backing vocals, organ (?)
Brian May - guitars, backing vocals
John Deacon - bass guitar (?)
Mack - synthesizer
***Note - it is unclear if Roger does his own bass or if it's John. Freddie may be on organ. It may be Roger though or Mack on synths***
- Roger's ode to rock and roll. Freddie sings the intro section and then Roger takes care of the rest.
- Freddie recorded a complete vocal take for the song and Roger recorded a vocal take for the song. Roger wanted to sing it but Mack wanted Freddie's vocals on it. Afterwards Brian voted for Freddie's take but John voted for Roger thus the compromise.
- It was performed live sporadically, even occasionally used as a set opener with Freddie on vocals.
QUOTES:
- "Rock It (Prime Jive) is totally elemental. It’s the most basic song ever that just says you can enjoy rock ‘n’ roll. That’s all.” – Roger Taylor – Sounds – 1980.
UNRELEASED LIVE VERSIONS:
LIVE IN PHOENIX - 1980
- AUDIO only as there is no existing video footage of this track live!
PERSONAL NOTES:
- One of my favorite underrated tracks. Yeah it's a bit mindless but it is a fun rocker. Great driving song! I would love to hear the full Freddie take and the full Roger take.
Next up, Freddie takes on suicide as only Freddie can..with a bit of comedy. Don't Try Suicide

When I hear that rock and roll
It gets down to my soul
When it's real rock and roll
When I hear that rock and roll
It gets down to my soul
When it's real rock and roll
Oh rock and roll
Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh
You really think they like to rock in space
Well I don't know
What do you know?
What do you hear
On the radio?
Coming through the air
I said Mama
I ain't crazy
I'm all right - all right
Hey c'mon baby said it's all right
To rock'n'roll on a Saturday night
I said 'shoot and get your suit and come along with me'
I said 'c'mon baby down come and rock with me' I said 'yeah'
What do you do?
To get to feel alive
You go downtown
And get some of that prime jive
I said Mama
I ain't crazy
I'm all right - all right
Hey c'mon baby said it's all right
To rock'n'roll on a Saturday night
I said 'shoot and get your suit and come along with me'
I said 'c'mon baby down come and rock with me' I said 'yeah'
We're gonna rock it
Hey c'mon baby said it's all right
To rock'n'roll on a Saturday night
I said 'shoot and get your suit and come along with me'
I said 'c'mon baby down come and rock with me' I said 'yeah'
