New album! Roger Taylor - Fun In Space (1981)A little background. Roger was a strong songwriter who was a bit limited by Queen. He would write a ton but only get one or two songs per Queen album so he had a lot left over. So he figured the best thing he could do would be record a solo album. There was never any talk of leaving Queen or trying to forge a solo career, it was merely a way to just get on record some of the ideas he had that weren't going to be used for Queen. At this point, Roger was headlong into exploring synthesizers and sci-fi sounds from his work on the Flash Gordon Soundtrack. What was interesting is that most solo projects from successful bands were usually about guys getting together with famous friends and having drunken jams. Roger didn't go about it like that and instead made a solo album in the truest sense of the word. With only producer David Richards adding some keyboards here and there, Roger was left to do everything else! All in all, Roger's album might not be everyone's cup of tea. Roger hasn't hit his full pop sensibility so his tracks are very raw with no help from Freddie or Brian. They aren't bad at all and in some cases they are brilliant. I don't think Roger really hit his solo peak though til 1994's Happiness, but his solo efforts before then are still a great work in progress. Issued in the UK where it hit #18 and in the US where it hit #121. As a joke, Roger put a PPS in the liner notes PPS: 157 synthesizers There are no sales reports. Tracks on the album1. No Violins (Taylor) 2. Laugh Or Cry (Taylor) 3. Future Management (You Don't Need Nobody Else) (Taylor) 4. Let's Get Crazy (Taylor) 5. My Country Part I & II (Taylor) 6. Good Times Are Now (Taylor) 7. Magic Is Loose (Taylor) 8. Interlude In Constantinople (Taylor) 9. Airheads (Taylor) 10. Fun In Space (Taylor) First up is: No Violins

No Violins
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboards David Richards - keyboards
- Roger's first track is a good one. A straight forward rocker with a few keyboard moments.
- This track, like most of Roger's first two albums were never played live since he didn't tour until he formed his sideband in 1987 and didn't tour solo until 1994.
PERSONAL NOTES: - A strong opener. Great lyrical wordplay from someone who is not known for his lyrics.
Up next: Roger's first ballad of sorts: Laugh Or Cry

Thanks for the opening acts answer.
No Violins
Why does the opening of this song remind me of DOOL? :D That was also written by RT, right?
Don't blame RT for releasing an album. I didn't realize he wrote a lot of songs just as BM and FM. That's why I was surprised in that Wroclaw Press Conference when the question was directed to him regarding song writing and to share the "recipe". Now I know :D
JMO.... I have a feeling that FM and BM dominated the Queen production, actually a little more FM than BM but certainly RT and JD just seem to go along with the other two. I'm sure there were heated arguments about their production but still either FM or BM had the final say. What say you, Talon?

:D Never really made the connection to DOOL! Awesome! Surprised I didn't! And yes, though credited to Queen, Roger was really the songwriter on that one.
As for the team. They always stressed that it was a 4-way partnership and they even said that John could get very animated at times. I do have the feeling that Freddie got his way quite often because he was very good at manipulating people to come around to his way of thinking. Like his pre-Queen band Ibex - Freddie wanted to change the name to Wreckage but no one else seemed thrilled with it. Well Freddie called them all individually later on, each time saying that all the other members were on board with the name change which would make the called member say, "Well if everyone else is okay with it, I'm okay with it".
AND Brian often said that Freddie was the best mediator as well so I just have a gut feeling that Freddie was able to get his way often without his bandmates even realizing it.
Brian was often the most stubborn on things as well so I'm sure that worked to his advantage as well. I think RT and JD were definitely heard and definitely had strong opinions too though.
What I really believe is that up until The Miracle album, I really think whomever wrote the song got the final say about their song. As far as songwriting credits though it was natural at first as Freddie and Brian were writing a lot more. So as Roger developed it was difficult for him to shoehorn more on due to the way things already were. Thus it makes sense that when you look at it. Outside of collaborations and while Freddie was alive:
John had 1 solo song Brian had 1 solo EP and 1 strong collaboration CD which was more of a duets - I include it only because he wrote/produce/played on it beyond the normal collaboration) Freddie had 3 Non-Album Singles, and 2 solo albums. Roger though had 1 Non Album single, 2 solo albums, and 3 albums with his sideband.
Because he had less avenue to release his songs!
John I have the feeling just wrote at a much slower pace and was always happy with 1-2 songs per album.

Laugh Or Cry
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboards David Richards - keyboards
- A much different song that Roger had done up to this point. - Played live by The Cross during their first tour on occasion but never performed by Roger solo. There are no YT videos unfortunately!
PERSONAL NOTES: - One of my favorites off the first RT album. Simple, acoustic with some very earnest vocals!
NEXT UP, Roger's solo single, a reggae inspired track, Future Management

Talon, just FYI... I'm bringing some quotes here from the main thread today... Seoulmate....we haven't heard from Talon lately. Maybe you should put him on your list and give him a 'shout out'?!
No need. Talon spends a lot of time on Atop and can be found on the incredible Queen Discussion Thread (52 pages so far). It's pretty much a doctorate/documentary on Queen with a Q&A component and is quite impressive.

Future Management
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards David Richards - keyboards
- Issued as a single in the UK where it hit #49 and in the Netherlands where it did not chart.
- Roger performed (mimed) it on Top Of The Pops and a few other tv shows but never again since.
TOP OF THE POPS
PERSONAL NOTES: - This song was SO different than anything Roger had created. In his own way, he was trying to branch away from straight forward rock and roll and more into groovier tunes. As much of the time though...his lyrics are...well suspect.
Next up: The raucous, let's make sure we remiind the folks that I am a rocker at heart...Let's Get Crazy
