It's a great film! Everyone should see it once for a big laugh

Roger never really talked about it but from my impressions, Roger was the first to get the synthesizer and the first to introduce them to Queen even pushing them to use them a bit for The Game. I think this song was the result of Roger seeing just what he could do with it!

My last post this year. Getting up early to catch a flight out West. I have to finish packing.

Going on vacation (family reunion/vacation) 3 generation/5 cities in 3-weeks time :D I am tired already just thinking about it ....lots of driving. I doubt if any of the kids will share their I-pads unless they are asleep

- An epic track to close out the album.
- It is a droney keyboard synthy exercise that would have fit in quite well on the Flash Gordon Soundtrack
- It is also reminiscent of some Pink Floyd work especially at the tail end of the song.
- This track was never performed live.

PERSONAL NOTES:
- This is a song which is nice to listen to cranked up REAL loud in the dark of night with only a candle and some nice incense burning.

Next up: I will do a first. I will touch on the first REAL Queen compilation. Released in 1981, Greatest Hits and all it's incarnations.

Greatest Hits

A little background:

Going by the fact that John joined in 1971, the band decided to use 1981 to mark it's ten year anniversary. Another reason to celebrate this year and mark it with a Greatest Hits collection is that the band released two albums in 1980 and had decided not to release any studio albums in this year, leaving enough room in the schedule for such a compilation.

There was no universal track listing, leaving differing track listings for differing regions. However, the UK release is considered the torch bearer.

The band decided up front that the tracks would have to be real genuine hits to be considered. It had to be a Top 30 hit in the UK to be considered. The only exception was We Will Rock You which technically was a B-Side.

This is the best selling album in the band's career having sold somewhere between 25-35 million copies worldwide and is THE greatest selling album in the history of the UK and was in the UK charts for 449 weeks.

As such it has been re-released several times over the years. I will detail that here and give you various track listings.

The initial UK (and Colombia, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Israel, India, Mexico, a Netherlands, Portugal, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, USSR, Russian Federation, Yugoslavia, Venezuela, South Africa, and Zimbabwe) release:

That is how it remained until 1992 when new record company Hollywood Records released a significantly different compilation which I will detail in that year as the reasons it are different are due to a different compilation from that year.

The UK track listing was finally released in the US in 1996 when it was packaged with Greatest Hits II (the first year that was released in the US as well). It was also rereleased as The Platinum Collection (collecting Greatest Hits I, II, & III) in 2000.

In 2004, to commemorate the opening of the musical We Will Rock You in Las Vegas, Hollywood Records released a new Greatest Hits. For the first time, the UK track listing (sort of) had a standalone release in the US. I say sort of because it did include 3 bonus tracks. They were I'm In Love With My Car (Taylor) because it was wildly popular that year from being in a Jaguar commercial. The other two were live versions of Under Pressure and Tie Your Mother Down taken from that years live release On Fire At The Bowl. A bonus DVD released as a Best Buy exclusive featured videos of Queen + George Michael doing Somebody To Love at the Freddie Tribute and Queen + Elton John doing The Show Must Go On from the Bejart Ballet Premiere.

Finally it was also remastered and re-released in 2011 by Island Records.

Next up? I'm not quite decided. We're definitely moving what's left of 1981 in the studio which is two collaborations Roger had. So we'll either have a 2-fer or an unheard of 5-fer. I'm leaning towards 5-fer as they aren't very significant so why waste two days on it. Roger's single with comedian Mel Smith (and B-Side) and then three songs Roger drummed for Gary Numan on his album

Ok a FIVE fer...because frankly it's almost me taking a day off. These are very insignificant and placed here only for completeness sake.

First off a single by comedian Mel Smith.

- These are both "comedy" bits by Mel Smith who generally is a funny guy. These tracks though are nothing to write home about.
- This single did not chart unsurprisingly.

Roger also played drums for Gary Numan, a singer who was a friend of the band and had bonded with them in Japan telling a funny story about having been abandoned by the band Japan whilst in Japan, Gary didn't know what to do with himself so he was invited backstage at the Queen show there. Afterwards he went out to a sushi place with the band. He admitted he didn't eat sushi though so Freddie sent his limo to the local McDonalds for some burgers and bring them back, paying the restaraunt owner to allow Gary to eat McDonalds in his establishment!

Anyways Gary had an album called Dance and he was a very new wave early 80s musician. To me all his songs sound the same. But I can see how Roger would be interested at times.

A little background:

- This is it. The single most controversial album in Queen's history. It is considered by most Queen fans to be the worst album the band ever did. Even members of the band have since disowned it at times. The big question is why?

- Well on the surface the easy answer is that while Queen fans did always appreciate experimentation and liked to see Queen try new things, the truth is that only goes so far. The fans were a rock audience at heart so doing an album that extrapolated from Another One Bites The Dust and into a soul/funk entire album.

- In truth, the album was the brainchild of Freddie and John. Brian and Roger were marginalized a bit during the process and that is part of the problem. Freddie was headlong into his gay club movement in Munich and in New York and certain of Freddie's associates (Paul Prenter) wanted Queen to play songs that would play in those clubs. John went along very easily because he wanted to play funk/soul/r&b stuff anyways.

- According to Brian, John went more violently "black" (the term for the music at the time) than the rest to the degree of wanting to record the music exactly as those artists would. So Brian was marginalized.

- The band was also at the height of their own discord at the time (certainly not helped by the musical situation) and things were falling apart a bit.

- But getting back to the album, it wasn't the complete abandonment that some have declared. The problem lies in the track listing. The whole first side is exactly what they had been going for. If you made it to side two of the vinyl (at the time - the second part of the CD now

) you find more typical Queen fodder but it was a bit of too little too late for many fans. Add to the fact that Under Pressure was actually a single a year prior to the album and was just thrown on the album as an afterthought led many to not care about the album.

- It is considered the beginning of the end for the band in the US, surprisingly after completely ruling the US charts with The Game. But the US audience is even more particular about their rock and disco sucking that it was tough on the band to release this album at this time. The 1982 tour would be the last time that Queen would play in the the US (with Freddie).

-My own personal thoughts? I agree with some of the Queen fans. It is my least favorite album BUT I do think there are some great gems on there. My issue is less the experimentation (as Freddie himself said, "It's only a bloody record!" MY issue though is with regards to the musicianship. TOO much synthesizer. Brian is marginalized so there is little guitar work on the album. Even worse is that drum machines were employed far too often. Yes they were the sound of the time and it was easier to program drums. But you have one of the greatest drummers around...and you're using a drum machine? The album as you'll find is more a collection of solo songs and not cohesive as an album as a whole. I DO think AL fans might just love this album to be honest, and I think AL himself would dig it.

- Now live, the album was a completely different ball of wax. The band was forced to compromise and Brian was able to rock out the songs much more and Roger added great drumming as well and the live versions often outclassed the studio versions.

- The album's chart performances: #22 in the US, #4 in the UK, Australia - #15, #1 in Austria, #6 in Canada, #1 in the Dutch Charts, #7 in France, #5 in Germany, #9 in Italy, #6 in Japan, #5 in New Zealand, #3 in Norway, and #4 in Sweden.

- It sold about 3-4 million copies worldwide.
