Talon, I have to agree with you about Body Language. LOL It's probably the least Queen-like song I've heard. For me, the lyrics and the music are just kind of boring and monotonous. Especially the lyrics!!! But what I find really interesting is this quote from Brian in your notes:

Can you explain to me how/why this song could be considered a "gay anthem"? What am I missing? I mean, the lyrics are so mind-numbingly boring... Give me your body, don't talk, body language body language, yeah sexy body, I want your body, baby you're hot, body language give me your body...

The lyrics include "legs, thighs, and ass". Is that what makes it "gay"? If the lyrics had included "tits" would have made the song more acceptable to Brian... more "universally applicable, because we have friends out there of every persuasion"?

I dunno. I wasn't familiar with the phrase, "Knock me down for a six any time" so I actually googled it. Didn't get any clear answers.

Well, he sang center stage in 1999 during his solo tour and again with Patti (which was really modeled after him and Treana Morris in 1999). I know that he and Patti did another duet of it during an intimate gig after the band got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I feel pretty certain that it was done the same way as in Amsterdam although I cannot be certain. In November 2004 amd June 2005, Roger did a guest appearance with Spike Edney's All-Star Band where he duetted with Chris Thompson (of Manfred Mann fame - "Blinded By The Light") - and I believe that was also done duet style. In 2007 there was another SAS gig where Roger duetted with Kiki Dee ("Don't Go Breaking My Heart") in Italy and I would again bet on the front and center duet style. In 2009 Roger and Patti duetted again at an SAS gig which was definitely a duet:

In 2010 Brian and Roger did a charity gig with a bunch of other people and they weren't billed as Queen where Roger and Patti duetted again and then in 2011 at the Freddie For A Day: Freddie's 65th Birthday Party they did it again.

SO there were times in between yes, but that was probably the last big official Queen gig that he did it at until Adam.

Hate is a strong word. They have their place at times I guess. I can't say I've never liked them but I definitely FAR prefer the sound of real life drums. During the Hot Space album it was actually WORSE than using electronic drums. They would use drum loops or programmed drums which basically meant Roger recorded a pattern and they would just loop it on the song...REALLY lazy for a band with the talent that Queen has. Although they will say they were aiming for a specific mechanical sound so it wasn't laziness but either way, it's not something I'm a fan of.

As for the Live at the Bowl (and the whole Hot Space tour (which I'm about to document) Roger used a combination. If you watch the video (i'll post it below in the next post) you'll see these very thin drums. Those are the syn-drums (synth-drums or electronic drums). He couldn't use the electronic drums for some of the older tracks so he did a combo unit. He also used the electronic drums during The Works tour (one of the only gripes on that tour).

I just was surprised at Brian's comments!!

Sure! Not being Brian, I can't speak for him but how I interpreted it (having seen the interview and some other similar interviews as well as stories from that time:

At that time 1981-1982 "gay" clubs/discos were springing up in NY and Munich. With Paul Prenter (Freddie's personal manager who was really an asshole and bad influence), Freddie had begun to pull away from the group a bit and threw himself headlong into this gay club/disco scene. So in a way, at least partially, Freddie was roping himself off from the band.

Paul Prenter and entourage couldn't have cared less about the music and was there for the partying, the drugs, the sex, etc. and was often trying to pull Freddie to go into the clubs. He even began trying to influence Freddie to write music that would be played in the places they were going..thus some of the Hot Space album. So what these clubs were choosing to play were songs that would become gay anthems of the time. SO this song in reality was Freddie trying to write a song that would be played at the gay nightclubs he was frequenting.

I believe that made Brian (and Roger) uncomfortable in that

a. That is one of the furthest from what he thought a rock band should be doing

b. He didn't want to to just be writing for exclusively for a niche audience like that AND

c. Probably most importantly, he felt that Paul Prenter and company were really being a bad influence on Freddie and an increasingly bad influence trying to rope out the band so that he (Paul) could enjoy his partying lifestyle.

Does that make better sense? It has nothing to do with the lyrics per se and no amount of tits or other female parts would have made it better...it was still clearly written for that exclusive scene. I'm still not explaining this quite the way I want but I hope it's more clear now at least

Basically it's a saying that means there is a lot going on. A texture of a song can be thin or thick. A thin rhythm texture would mean one instrument playing (perhaps a guitar) the rhythm (chords in time) without much adornment. A thicker rhythm would perhaps have 2 guitars, a piano, and a string section playing the same basic chord structure in rhythm for a more full sound. In Calling All Girls, Brian states basically there is an acoustic guitar AND an electric guitar doing the rhythm making it sound thicker than if it was just an acoustic. It relates to the Wall of Sound Gabby was asking about WAY back in the first few pages of the thread...Queen's backing vocals are usually VERY thick with multiple voices on one part.

We venture into the live concerts of 1982 including the Hot Space European Tour, the Hot Space World Tour and some miscellaneous gigs/appearances.

HOT SPACE EUROPEAN TOUR NOTES:

This marks the first time the band had an additional member as they hired Morgan Fisher to play additional keyboards for this tour. Morgan was previously in Mott The Hoople, the band that gave Queen their first big break by letting them open for them on their UK and US tours. Morgan was a good friend. Coincidentally Morgan had his own short lived progressive rock band in the mid 70s where he worked with none other than Tim Staffell (of pre-Queen Brian and Roger band, Smile).

The band played around with the set quite a bit on this tour mixing and matching tracks trying to find the right feel. It was also quite interesting at times as the somewhat negative reaction to the album by the hardcore rock fans often had Freddie trying to placate the audience telling them that it was only a bloody record and that they were just trying different sounds and that they hadn't lost their rock and roll feel.

However as I mentioned previously, the Hot Space tracks were far better in concert as they were forced to be far more organic. I have the feeling that if the album was recorded as they were performed live it wouldn't have been quite nearly as disliked.

With that being said this tour was one of the better tours. Freddie's voice was in great shape, and the band really gelled.

- Unfortunately it went unrecorded (at least it hasn't ever leaked) but Freddie jumped on stage with his good friend Elton John to do some rock classics. I really wish I could have seen this. Not to be outdone by Elton's outrageous stagewear, Freddie raided Elton's wardrobe before he jumped on stage with him! Two divas battling it out!

NEXT UP? We delve into 1983. Which could probably be done in one post. You see after the grueling long Hot Space tours, increasing dissatisfaction, and tensions within the band due to various issues all led to the band deciding to take the next year off. Freddie did absolutely nothing...perhaps he started his first solo album but nothing surfaced in 1983. Roger definitely began working on his second full solo album but again nothing surfaced although he did help out Robert Plant during a solo TV performance. John played with a few friends so had a collaboration. Brian stayed the most active and had the only real Queen related release...his first solo release, a 3-song EP which is where we start! Brian May & Friends - Star Fleet Project and the first song...Star Fleet

Well the Queen manager Jim Beach was someone who ran things from the home office. He oversaw the empire so to speak. Paul was more of a day to day on the road manager type. He would travel with Freddie and deal with press requests or whatever Freddie wanted - really more of a personal assistant than a real "manager".

Basically it's the job that Peter Freestone took over. Peter Freestone met Freddie in 1979 when Freddie did his bit with the Royal Ballet. Peter was hired to do wardrobe for Queen then on and as time went on, he began taking care of Freddie becoming his personal assistant.

Prenter also sold Freddie out to the tabloids eventually and Freddie cut him out of his life forever. He really was a sycophant that cared more about fame and what Freddie could get for him as far as lifestyle.

As for the others...I'm sure they did. Bands that get as big as Queen usually have people who tour with them. For example I know Roger used to have an assistant named Crystal Taylor (a guy but no relation) and there are some funny stories about trouble they got into but he was never an issue as far as being a bad influence...more like Roger was the bad influence

Nothiner really bad happened at the concerts so to speak, it was definitely more of a preemptive strikeby Freddie.

Here's what happened generally. In the 70s Queen was sort of lumped with the Led Zeppelin's/Aerosmiths real - hard rock audience. And they fit the image. Sure they were certainly more eclectic and definitely did things out of the realm of hard rock...but it was all kind of related.

Then disco came.

Then Freddie changed his image, cutting off his well loved long hair and growing his mustache - which at first wasn't well received! Fans used to jokingly mail packages of razors to the fan club or throw them to him on stage. He used to joke with fans..."Do you like my new mustache?" They'd yell "No!!!" He'd say "Fuck off" and everyone would laugh.

So it had been going on forever and disco hatred was running rampant in hard rock circles...then Queen made essentially what was thought of as disco album so fans felt really like What the FUCK is this?

I think Queen fans in general were definitely rock fans who had been open minded to see the band experiment in different directions here and there as long as their homebase was in rock. This was a totally different band.

So the album tanked generally because fans were disappointed with such a radical shift in their sound. Since it didn't sell nearly as well as previous efforts, they realized why and so Freddie wanted to let them know that it was an experiment, not a new direction...although if it had been a smash, who knows.

As far as setlists go. The band had SO many hits that no album ever really dominated BUT if you look at the genesis of new album cuts you will find that Hot Space added more songs to the set list than previous albums did to their prospective tours.

Fans DID overreact - that is for certain and it affected the band that's also for certain (See The Works album coming up in 1984)

Not as much of a joke as you may think. Freddie used to like wearing white pants in general as in a big audience, white pants seemed to track better from the back of the crowd than colors that seemed to blend in....so in a way yes. He always wore white especially for big audiences! EVERYTHING had a reason

Up until 1982 remember they didn't have anyone else on stage with them, so if there were piano based songs Freddie had to play them.

But after they got a keyboardist, Freddie did tend to not play piano nearly as much and also didn't write as much from the piano because he didn't want to be tied to it during concerts. So as the tours went on he played less and less piano....BUT unfortunately never for STL.
