Hammer To Fall
Written by: Brian May
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals
Brian May - guitars, backing vocals
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums, backing vocals
Fred Mandel - synthesizer
- A return to rocking for the band. The track was played live through 1986, again at the Tribute Concert with Gary Cherone (of Extreme), through Brian's tours and again with QPR. I was surprised it was left out of the QAL gigs.
- In 1998 Brian radically changed the song to have a very slow ballad version of it before rocking it back up. QPR used this arrangement during the first tour as well.
- Issued as a single in the US where it did not chart. In the UK it hit #13. Also released in Australia (#55), France, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain.
- The track was also later used in the film Highlander to which Queen did the soundtrack for.
QUOTE:
- "The mushroom cloud thing was for me very real part of my childhood trough the Cuba crisis. We thought the bomb was about to drop, and I used to have dreams about that." - Brian May – 2003
ALTERNATE RELEASED VERSIONS:

MALOUF MIX

MALOUF MIX EDIT
NO YT VID
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Same alterations done to the Single Edit Version of the track.
ROCKS VIDEO VERSION
GREATEST VIDEO HITS 2 VERSION
NO YT VID
- All similiar to the video version and really unessential.
OFFICIALLY RELEASED LIVE VERSIONS:
LIVE MAGIC
- AUDIO Only - although this version is the same that's On Live At Wembley - just mastered differently.
LIVE AT WEMBLEY
- Famous performance. Freddie really playing with the crowd!
HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY
- AUDIO only but a good version
QUEEN + GARY CHERONE - FREDDIE MERCURY TRIBUTE
- I LOVE this version. Gary was one of the few from the tribute concert that was in the same ballpark charisma-wise as Freddie. A very well done version.
BRIAN MAY - LIVE AT BRIXTON ACADEMY
- Brian closed out his shows with this one. A bit much for him vocally but he handles himself well.
QPR - RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS VERSION
NO YT VID
- I think the Brian 1998 version of the arrangement is a bit better (see below) but it is still amazing. The vid below is from South Africa - similar to what was on ROTC
QPR - LIVE IN UKRAINE
- The band moved this song around a lot, eventually settling on opening the show with it. It's a MUCH shorter version and the elaborate arrangement is gone.
UNRELEASED LIVE VERSIONS
BRIAN MAY - LIVE IN PARIS 1998
- AUDIO only unfortunately but freakin' awesome arrangement.
QPR - LIVE IN 2005
- Just a note as I couldn't find a YT vid - during the 2005 tour Paul had some problems with his voice and so Roger sang the rock section of this track instead. Of course I liked it best
PERSONAL NOTES:
- AN awesome song. I actually like the slow/fast version even better but all in all it's a song that gets your blood pumping and your fist in the air...as well as a sore throat from screaming along!
Next up a much quieter moment - Is This The World We Created?

Here we stand or here we fall
History won't care at all
Make the bed light the light
Lady Mercy won't be home tonight yeah
You don't waste no time at all
Don't hear the bell but you answer the call
It comes to you as to us all
We're just waiting
For the hammer to fall
Oh every night and every day
A little piece of you is falling away
But lift your face the Western Way
Build your muscles as your body decays yeah
Toe your line and play their game yeah
Let the anaesthetic cover it all
Till one day they call your name
You know it's time for the hammer to fall
Rich or poor or famous
For your truth it's all the same (oh no oh no)
Lock your door the rain is pouring
Through your window pane (oh no)
Baby now your struggle's all in vain
For we who grew up tall and proud
In the shadow of the mushroom cloud
Convinced our voices can't be heard
We just wanna scream it louder and louder louder
What the hell we fighting for?
Just surrender and it won't hurt at all
You just got time to say your prayers
While your waiting for the hammer to hammer to fall
It's gonna fall
Hammer..you know..hammer to fall
Waiting for the hammer to fall now baby
While you're waiting for the hammer to fall
Give it to me one more time
History won't care at all
Make the bed light the light
