- Twice a B-Side. First off for I Was Born To Love You in 1985 and then when Freddie's cover of The Great Pretender was re-released in 1993.

PERSONAL NOTES:
- I can see why this is a B-Side. One of my least favorite pieces in Freddie's catalogue. It seems like an idea that Freddie just rushed through to get a B-Side. B-Sides are interesting in that fashion for Queen. It always seems like either it's a true gem that for some reason wasn't put on the album (like I Go Crazy from The Works or is just a half baked idea not going anywhere like this one.

Next up? The OTHER B-side. This one is a bit of a half baked idea but it is a MUCH better idea

- Original version (as you will see below) had Brian on guitar. Brian later on mentioned he was hurt because Freddie replaced him with someone playing his part. I don't remember the exact quote but it was basically if you want to be away from Queen, fine, but if you want my sound on a song, and you have me....use me!

PERSONAL NOTES:
- I don't usually say that half baked ideas are great fun and this is definitely half-baked. The lyrics are really nonsensical and repetitive. But it's the most rocking thing of the sessions and probably one of the closest to Queen that is from that session.

- A much more complete demo. Well liked by fans. Freddie later submitted this to the A Kind Of Magic sessions and Queen worked on it some but it was ultimately rejected.

- Freddie is suffering from a major cold so this makes it an interesting listen. Poor Freddie! Very undeveloped but it does contain some nice riffs that could have been used.

- My favorite demo of the sessions. It is on its way to being a great track. I really wished he finished this track. Some great vocals and a great swinging feel.

State Of Shock (with Michael Jackson)

- A duet between Freddie and Michael. The other song that leaked from the Mercury-Jackson sessions.
- Eventually Michael released the song but with Mick Jagger instead of Freddie due to scheduling conflicts.
- Brian and Roger have stated they are working on a Queen + version to hopefully be released this year.
- A third song from these sessions entitled Victory has been mentioned but not much is known about it.

PERSONAL NOTES:
- One of the major reasons I got the expansive Solo Collection in 2000 was for demos like this! Another reason I'd like to see a similar Queen package. They aren't amazing songs per se but I love hearing Freddie's creative process. I like New York the best but they all have some merit!

Next up? The Collaborations start. The first is the Queen collaboration of 1985....Elton John's Too Young where the rhythm section was Queen? Roger and John perform on Elton's track!

- Roger Daltrey's solo album had a final track which was a tribute to The Who's drummer Keith Moon who had passed 8 years earlier. It had numerous drummers on it including Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's son), Cozy Powell (who would later work with Brian extensively) and Roger among others.

After the 1984 Works tour the band decided to do a few small tours in 1985, one jaunt to Australia and one back to Japan where the setlist for the most part would be the same, perhaps a bit more streamlined. However it wasn't the tour that was the thing...it was the gigs that kind of bookended the tour. They were one of the main headliners of the first ever Rock In Rio festival playing two dates over the course of the week! And of course...Live Aid.

- Released on video and laserdisc but long out of print.
- There are several interesting moments during these sets. Freddie would usually dress in his video outfit for I Want To Break Free including false breasts and everything. Unfortunately fans here in South America took the song to heart as a bit of a protest song so they didn't appreciate the humor nearly as much. Stories say that the crowd pelted Freddie with rubbish until he was able to quickly strip off the gear. Though later reports refute that notion.

More though it was an amazing concert played to over 350,000 who all sang Love Of My Life word for word and made a sea of arms for Radio Ga Ga. The band's performance wasn't their best but it was still a very memorable set of gigs!

- This is it! What is voted the best live performance in rock history. And the band didn't initially agree to appear at first! After being left off of the Band-Aid single, Bob Geldof had to track the band down and threaten them to appear

The band eventually relented and followed Geldof's advice to be a global jukebox - just play the hits.

Later on, Freddie had some issues with his throat and his doctors advised him he should cancel. Freddie would have none of that.

The band's sound guy, Trip Khalif later commented that he did help the band by sneaking out before the band's set and setting up the sound to benefit the band, but seriously it was all Freddie's doing. His charisma, his leadership just forged forward and everyone admits that despite a Led Zeppelin reunion, sets by U2, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Elton John, et. al. Queen were the best band of the day.

The band had been planning another sabbatical like 1983 for the rest of 1985 into 1986 but yet after Live Aid they felt really recharged. They would go into the studio and actually release a single One Vision (which I will discuss in 1986 due to it being on the A Kind Of Magic album.

And that's it for 1985! Next we move onto 1986 with Freddie's work on a musical, John Deacon's first (and only to date) solo single and A Kind Of Magic as well as Queen's last tour ever.

- Dave Clark from the Dave Clark Five wrote a musical that debuted in 1986 called Time. The concept album recorded included vocals by many different stars such as Julian Lennon, Stevie Wonder, and Dionne Warwick. The musical starred Sir Laurence Olivier (via film) and Cliff Richard. Dave Clark asked Freddie to do two songs...this one and In My Defence. He actually wanted Freddie to do a third (Born To Rock and Roll) but it had already been promised to Cliff Richards.

- Issued as a single in the UK and hit #32.

- It was on this project that Freddie first met Mike Moran with whom he would work extensively afterwards.

- At first Freddie refused to work with the studio musicians, wanting to bring Queen in with him but Dave Clark made him a deal stating that if he wasn't satisfied with the backing band's efforts, he could re-record it but he ended up satisfied.

- The musical was staged at the Dominion Theatre and Freddie also recorded his video there...the same place that We Will Rock You has been staged for over 10 years now.

- There was no live performance of the song unfortunately as Freddie's last actual live appearance was at a charity performance of Time to benefit AIDS. But he didn't sing Time.

- The second contribution to the Time soundtrack.
- Performed once at a charity gala performance of Time which was Freddie's last real live performance. (He did appear with Montserrat Caballe later on in the year but the performances were mimed due to both not having time to rehearse and some unpredictability of Freddie's voice as AIDS began to take its toll).
- A slightly remixed version was released as a single about a year after Freddie died and it hit #8 on the UK charts.

PERSONAL NOTES:
- If a song was ever written for Freddie, it was this one. Some claim the same about his cover of The Great Pretender a few years later and while I can agree on that one to, this song is just pure Freddie to me. It's a beautiful track, a beautiful sentiment. Just beautiful!

Next up? John goes solo! One time only affair...although he could have skipped it

Hi Talon! I have a question about Barcelona. I know we are still in 1985 and I should be patient, but... I spent part of my childhood in a radio station. My brother and I used to go there on saturday night and pick up random records to play. And we had thousands of them! We loved Queen, but we didn't know anything about them, just the music and the photos in the LPs. Once I get home from school and there was a concert on TV: Monserrat Caballé and the guy from the records! It was the first time I saw Freddie and it was great, I became a fan then. Last summer I was with friends and we were talking about the music in London Olympic games. I was kind of offended when they told the music was going to be lipsynched and one of my friends told me that even Caballé and Mercury were lipsynching Barcelona in that concert. It is true? Of course is just out of curiosity and is not going to change my opinion about the greatness of that performance. Moreover, of all the singers in the word, these two don't have to prove they can sing live.

Unfortunately it is correct. Freddie's last actual performance was 4/4/88 in the Dominion Theatre during the charity gala of Time The performances with Montserrat were in fact mimed for one of the following (or all of the below - it has never been made crystal clear):

a. Freddie's voice was starting to be affected by AIDS so he was never quite sure if he would have his voice or not.

b. The fact is that Montserrat's diva schedule was so tightly packed that it was impossible to find a time to rehearse a live version of it - as I will make mention later, even on the album it was less a collaboration as Freddie and Mike would do all the work and Montserrat would fly in, learn it, sing it, and then fly out. There was never time for a proper rehearsal.

Freddie didn't like miming but he had little control over it.
