A two-fer again today. Two demos which had nothing to do with Highlander
First up...
Butterfly
Written by: Brian May
Musicians:
Brian May - piano
- Taken from the Magic Years documentary. It is basically Brian on the piano doodling. Later on he stated he had called it Buttefly in his head. It isn't clear if it is the beginning of the song Some Things That Glitter which was recorded by Queen + Paul Rodgers and then re-recorded by Kerry Ellis (and re-titled I Loved A Butterfly).
PERSONAL NOTE: - Not much to say, but I always love hearing genius play around on any type of instrument.
Back To Storm
Written by: Freddie Mercury (most likely)
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - vocals, piano Roger Taylor - drums John Deacon - bass
- The title was given to it from the lyrics - there has been no comment by the band. - Brian May hadn't gotten involved at this point and Freddie's definitely in charge.
ALTERNATE VERSION
LITTLE BOOGIE DEMO NO YT VID - NOT ESSENTIAL - There is a somewhat earlier version with just Freddie on piano playing the same basic track.
PERSONAL NOTE: This is a great jam. Upbeat and could have made a great track if further developed.
BONUS NOTE:
Friends In Pain
Written by: John Deacon (Reportedly)
This is a rumored demo supposedly from these sessions. Nothing else is known about it. I used to believe that given that the title is an amalgamation of Friends Will Be Friends and Pain Is So Close To Pleasure it was a false rumor...but with the demo release of A Kind Of Vision I have rethought that position figuring that perhaps those two tracks started as the same track before going in radically different directions.
Next? The A Kind Of Magic Sessions are OVER. Next I will discuss Queen's second live album, the much derided, initially UK only release Live Magic. Then after that there are quite a few collaborations and then into the last ever Queen tour.

LIVE MAGIC1. One Vision (Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon) 2. Tie Your Mother Down (May) 3. Seven Seas Of Rhye (Mercury) 4. A Kind Of Magic (Taylor) 5. Under Pressure (Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon) 6. Another One Bites The Dust (Deacon) 7. I Want To Break Free (Deacon) 8. Is This The World We Created? (Mercury/May) 9. Bohemian Rhapsody (Mecury) 10. Hammer To Fall (May) 11. Radio Ga Ga (Taylor) 12. We Will Rock You (May) 13. Friends Will Be Friends (Mercury/Deacon) 14. We Are The Champions (Mercury) 15. God Save The Queen (arr. May) Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals, piano, guitar Brian May - guitar, vocals John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums, percussion, vocals Spike Edney - keyboards, guitar, vocals, piano - Recorded in August 9, 1986 at Knebworth Park, Stevenage, Hetfordshire, UK for tracks 1-3, 6-7, 9, 11-15. Track 8 recorded in July 11, 1986 at Wembley Stadium, London, UK. Track 10 recorded in July 12, 1986 at Wembely Stadium, London, UK. Tracks 4-5 recorded in July 27, 1986 at Nepstadion, Budapest, Hungary. - Released on December 1st, 1986. It hit #3 in the UK. It was finally released in the US eleven years later in 1996 (It did not chart). - Only A Kind Of Magic, Another One Bites The Dust, and Hammer To Fall are full out live versions. The rest are edited down - in some cases severely such as Bohemian Rhapsody cutting out the opera section. PERSONAL NOTES: - This album really is a travesty for the way that it is edited. It is notable to get for two purposes only. The full Another One Bites The Dust is my favorite live version of the track. Secondly. Most of the tracks are taken from Queen's final gig in Knebworth. So even edited, it is nice to here Freddie's final stand with the band. Next up? We get into the studio collaborations. I'll go for a three-er. First off will be Elton John's Angeline featuring Roger Taylor on drums and John Deacon on bass. Second off will be Roger's collaborations - He worked with a group called Magnum and produced their album. He appeared on two tracks on it as well.

Today we start with the first of two posts that deal with the collaborations of 1986! They are divided a bit strangely but if you follow it will make sense.
This first post will deal with the one Queen (at least multiple members) which is Elton John's Angeline (with Roger and John). I will also deal with add on Roger's sole solo collaboration with a band he was tasked to produce, Magnum. I will also add Brian's collaboration with Spanish artists Ramoncin and John's "collaboration" Minako Honda.
Then we will delve into Freddie's 1986 collaborations - mostly with Billy Squier but also with German actress Jo Dare!
So first we listen to Elton John with Queen's rhythm section.
Elton John - Angeline
Written by: Elton John/Bernie Taupin/Alan Carvell
Musicians:
Elton John - piano, vocals John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums Alan Carvell - backing vocals Davey Johnstone - guitar, backing vocals
**NOTE - Possibly more people involved with keyboards/backing vocals but I am unclear. I am fairy certain about the above though. as I know the first three. Alan was credited with backing vocals on the album so I would think it would be on a song he helped co-wrote, and Davey Johnstone was Elton's guitarist at the time. There are many credited with keyboards so I don't know who did what**
- This track was actually recorded the previous year during their last collaboration in 1985. It didn't see the light of day until this year's Leather Jackets album.
PERSONAL NOTES: An alright track. Nothing spectacular but I wouldn't skip it either. Pretty much a filler track.
Magnum - Sometime Love & Magnum - When The World Goes Down
Written by: Tony Clarkin
Musicians:
Tony Clarkin - guitar Bob Catley — vocals Wally Lowe — bass Mark Stanway - keyboards Mickey Barker — drums Roger Taylor - backing vocals
NO YT VID FOR SOMETIME LOVE
- Roger Taylor and David Richards were approached to produce an album for UK "metal" (really hard rock) group Magnum. The album was called Vigilante and it hit #24 in the UK charts which was to that time their most commercial success. - Roger and David were also approached about producing the followup but schedules didn't co-incide. - When The World Goes Down was released as a single but I don't know about it's chart success (or lack of).
PERSONAL NOTES: Fairly standard run of the mill 80s rock. It has some good moments and if you like that time frame you might just dig this.
Ramoncin - Como Un Sussuro
Written by: Ramoncin (?)
Musicians:
Ramoncin - vocals Brian May - guitar
**NOTE - I have no idea really but I do know the above***
- Ramoncin was a famous rock singer in Spain who had success there in the late 70s and early 80s. - I'm not certain how this collaboration came to be to be honest.
PERSONAL NOTES: - Not a song I look for very often but serviceable.
Minako Honda - Roulette
Written by: John Deacon/Robert Ahwai
Musicians:
Minako Honda - vocals John Deacon - bass (?)
NO YT VID
- Lyrics look familiar? Basically this is a cover of John Deacon's No Turning Back done mostly in Japanese. - It is unclear if John recorded a new bass track for her or if it is the original, but the backing music does appear to be somewhat different. - Brian would join Minako for a few singles on her next album.
PERSONAL NOTES: - Not quite as good as the original but Minako isn't horrible.
MISSING: This Is Your Time - A collaboration between r&b singer Errol Brown and John Deacon where John co-wrote the track and played bass but that is all we know about it as it went unreleased.
Next up? One of my favorite of the collaboriations - Freddie with Billy Squier!

Freddie's 1986 Collaborations!
First up, his first of two collaborations with tourmate Billy Squier.
Billy Squier - Love Is The Hero
Written by: Billy Squier
Musicians:
Billy Squier - vocals, guitars, keyboards Freddie Mercury - vocals, piano (on the extended version) TM Stevens - bass guitar
***Either Jimmy Bralower or Bobby Chouinard played drums***
- NOTE that the first verse is only available on the extended version - NOTE for the first time I'd say the original version is NOT ESSENTIAL - skip right to the far superior extended version. - Issued as a single but it did not chart. - Features Freddie as almost a duet with Billy.
ALTERNATE VERSIONS
EXTENDED VERSION
- ESSENTIAL - Features the same song but with an amazing vocal/piano intro sung by Freddie. This was to be on the original album but record executives axed the idea complaining to Squier that fans might be too confused, thinking it was a Queen song. Billy's response? "We should all have that problem". - Billy spoke about it later on stating that they had been recording the song all day and they hung out at Freddie's house late into the night and sometime really late before they all crashed, Freddie just rolled up to his piano and rolled out this melodramatic intro that Billy LOVED. The next morning, Freddie didn't even recall it so Billy dragged him to the studio and had to coax it back out of him.
REACH FOR THE SKY VERSION NO YT VID - NOT ESSENTIAL - Includes the opening and is a quicker edit than the extended version but it doesn't lose any of Freddie's bits. This was on the Billy Squier 2 CD anthology.
PERSONAL NOTES: LOVE it. Probably my favorite collaboration. I love Freddie's vocals on the song. Very playful, but very powerful as well. The two worked well together.
Ok from the same album came the song...
Billy Squier - Lady With A Tenor Sax
Written by: Freddie Mercury/Billy Squier
OK INTERJECTION NEEDED HERE. This is a track that Freddie and Billy wrote and ended up on the album. The album version does not feature Freddie at all - he just helped mix it. When the Freddie Mercury Solo Collection came out it included a "Works In Progress" Version featuring Freddie on vocals. So that's the one I'm featuring. The note is to say if you went out to buy the Enough Is Enough album, Freddie is not on that version.
- This was the version Freddie recorded to show Billy Squier how it should go.
PERSONAL NOTES: - This is also a fun track - a bit more nonsensical. Not Freddie's best lyrics, but still a fun song. Unfortunately his lyrics get worse on his next collaboration...
Freddie Mercury/Jo Dare - Hold On
Written by: Freddie Mercury/Mack
Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals Jo Dare - vocals
Others are unknown.
- Recorded and released in Germany on the soundtrack of the film Zabou. - Not much is known about the song, but it definitely is a throwaway Freddie writing. Mack did the music and Freddie just threw some words on there and sang it. His vocals make up for much though so it is a fun silly listen.
and that's it! Next we move on to 1986 live - Queen's final stand with Freddie...

1986 - Live
The Magic Tour The band decided that they were going to have the biggest tour ever and did so with panache. They performed to over a million people over 26 shows with their biggest show also being their last. After they sold out Wembley Stadium (~75-80,000) they added a second Wembley date. That also sold out. Unfortunately there were no more open dates at Wembley (where reportedly they might have been able to sell three or four more gigs out, which prompted promoter Harvey Goldsmith to find another appropriate venue. He proposed Knebworth Park an extremely large open air concert venue. The band wasn't sure there would be enough support but they were dead wrong. Officially the audience size was 120,000 but from people who were there they say the crowd size was much closer to about 200,000. Quite a way to go out!
It is a question whether Freddie knew he had AIDS at this point or whether he worried about it or what not. Either way he seemed to know this was going to be the last hurrah. During all the bootlegs he never once said "See you next time!" or anything similar like he always had said on tour. This was also the tour that during interviews he began saying things like he knew he couldn't be running around on stage forever but that music would always be his thing.

MISCELLANEOUS 1986 LIVE
07/12/86 - Queen Kensington Roof Gardens - London, UK AS DICKY HART AND THE PACEMAKERS WITH SAMANTHA FOX AND GARY GLITTER Setlist:
Tutti Frutti/Sweet Little Rock and Roller/Johnny B. Goode
NOTE - This was the after-party from Wembley. The band just jammed on some oldies with people just joining up and sitting down. There is some famous footage of Freddie and Samantha Fox hamming it up.
07/19/86 - Brian May (with Marillion) Mungersdorfer Stadion - Cologne, Germany
Setlist (w/Brian): Market Square Heroes
NOTE - Marillion was opening for Queen at this gig and Brian was a fan of the prog-rockers so he jumped on stage with them. Fish returned the favor at a gig jamming with the band on Tutti Frutti
11/09/86 - Brian May (with Bad News & Jimmy Page) Hammersmith Odeon - London, UK Setlist:
Guitar Duel: Brian May vs Jimmy Page vs Adrin Edmonson/Bad News
NOTE - Bad News is a comedy troupe that made a parody rock band (ala Spinal Tap). It's notable mostly because two of the greatest guitarists guest in a duel! Brian and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin had a lot of fun here. Brian took a great interest and helped produce the comedy troupe's album. Very funny.
Next up? 1987 in the Studio. Queen takes the year off but there are a few solo ventures including actress Anita Dobson's first album which is produced and worked a lot on by Brian. We'll probably take this album a few tracks at a time. Freddie also has a great single!

It turns out that I was mistaken! SHOCK! I know. But looking back, I realize that Anita Dobson's Talking Of Love album chock full of Brian involvement wasn't actually released til 1988...SO it will be in that section we talk about it. So instead we turn our attentions on to Freddie's solo release in 1987. The Great PretenderWritten by: Buck Ram Musicians: Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals Mike Moran - piano, keyboards, drum programming (demo only) Harold Fisher - drums Alan Jones - bass guitar - Issued as a single in the UK and hit #4. It is backed with a track called Exercises In Free Love but in all honesty that discussion belongs in the Barcelona album discussion of 1988 so patience on that one. It was also released in Australia, The Netherlands (where it hit #9) and Japan. - The video is a hilarious one pitting Freddie against some of his previous Queen videos. Also included are some funny takes of Freddie, his friend Peter Straker, and Roger Taylor dressed in drag to be Freddie's girl backing vocalists. The extended version video (below) is even better as it has some backstage footage interspersed. - Freddie loved working with Mike Moran during the Time recordings so they decided to continue to collaborate. Initially they thought of doing a covers album, with another rumored song being Smoke Gets In Your Eyes but that has never been confirmed. Freddie also went into some ideas for a more conventional followup to Mr. Bad Guy. Both ideas were discarded with the onset of Barcelona- Never tried live. QUOTES: - “Most of the stuff I do is like pretending, it’s like acting; I go on stage and pretend to be a macho man. I think ‘The Great Pretender’ is a great title for what I do…I’ve always had this [idea] in the back of my head – a cover version, and this song is the one I’ve always wanted to do. I went into the studio and tried a few trials, and I liked it. It suited my voice and it’s a great song to sing.” – Freddie Mercury - “The mix saw our roles being somewhat reversed. David Richards, Queen’s producer, came into London to mix the track at Townhouse. I was rather nervous and concerned about what was, after all, my co-production. The mix went on and on, and so did my neurotic attention to every tiny teeny detail. On and on and on until Freddie could stand it no longer: ‘For God’s sake leave it alone!’ he demanded, ‘Let’s go home, dear. You’re doing a me!’ Freddie was in something of a quandary as to how to end the song. I had a few ideas, but as I tested each one, he merely pronounced limply, ‘Very good, dear’. I knew it wasn’t up to scratch. The ending just got longer and longer and seemed never to reach an end. Freddie urged me to ‘do a few flashy bits’. He loved anything technically virtuouso. It was then that he came up with Paganini, and that was the key to the problem. From that as a starting point, I went into a violin arrangement that eventually ended the record.” – Mike Moran ALTERNATE RELEASED VERSIONS EXTENDED VERSION- ESSENTIAL for the video - As mentioned above it features some interspersed backstage footage of the making of the video. BRIAN MALOUF MIX- ESSENTIAL - Maoluf just knows how to make a good remix that doesn't stray too far from the original but yet is different enough to matter. This version is a bit poppier with a bit of jangly guitar added. It is less orchestral but it still works well. - This version was also released as a single and it hit #29 in 1993. INSTRUMENTAL- NOT ESSENTIAL - As the title suggests. ORIGINAL DEMO- NOT ESSENTIAL - The song is practically done and is just a bit rougher in places. - Uses piano instead of synthesizer which of course makes me like it a bit more.... PERSONAL NOTES: If one song was made for Freddie to cover, it was this one. It is a brilliant cover! It is campy, theatrical, and just plain perfect. Next up? I'll tackle the released demos from the era that were discarded. So a SIX-fer...next.

Ok the Freddie demos from the 1986-1987 sessions that were eventually discarded (and one song Freddie recorded for the Fan Club) You Are The Only OneWritten by: Freddie Mercury Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals, piano - Obviously nowhere near complete especially lyrically. Some Queen fans believe this is a track Freddie was actually demoing in 1986 possibly for A Kind Of Magic but either way since it is obviously just Freddie & his piano it made sense to me to put it here. PERSONAL NOTES: - A nice simple melody that I would love to have seen explored further. Holding OnWritten by: Freddie Mercury Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals Mike Moran - keyboards David Richards - drum programming Erdal Kizilcay - bass guitar - Notable for having Freddie working with an outisde musician of some note, bassist Erdal Kizilcay who has worked with David Bowie, Jane Siberry, and Iggy Pop. PERSONAL NOTES: - Would have been a fun exploration. It's So YouWritten by: Freddie Mercury Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals Mike Moran - keyboards David Richards - drum programming - Freddie duets with himself a bit on the bluesy number. PERSONAL NOTES: - This one might be my favorite to have been a hit if it had been finished. Very slow bluesy track with Freddie working his vocal chords out. I Can't Dance/Keep SmilingWritten by: Freddie Mercury/Mike Moran - Two songs that flow into one another from the same drum loop. Fun tracks. - ‘I Can’t Dance’ was inspired by a ballet dancing friend of Freddie’s and there supposedly a take with said dancer on backing vocals. - ‘Keep Smilin’’ was written after Freddie was approached by the parents of Colin Preston, a lifelong Queen fan who bore a resemblance to Freddie and was involved in a car accident and sunk into a coma. They asked him to visit Colin. Freddie recorded a personal song for him and sent the tape to his family. Colin recovered slightly when hearing the song, reportedly, but eventually did succumb. PERSONAL NOTES: - I was so glad the Solo Collection came out so we could hear these tracks. They are very fun and although I LOVE Barcelona, I also wish I could have seen what Freddie and Mike Moran could have come up with for a full on pop/rock album. It could have been amazing. Yellow BreezesWritten by: Freddie Mercury/Mike Moran Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals Mike Moran - keyboards David Richards - drum programming Erdal Kizilcay - bass guitar - Insane. More work with Erdal. - More of an idea than a song. PERSONAL NOTES: I have no clue what Freddie is talking about. But he's having a lot of fun with it. I can't help but move to it though Have A Nice DayWritten by: Freddie Mercury/Mike Moran Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals Mike Moran - piano - When asked to record a message for the Queen Fan Club Convention in 1987, Freddie decided to do it Freddie style. A quick little sung message that is VERY nice indeed! Next up? Freddie fools around with Peter Straker and Mike Moran at his home.

Sometime between 1986 and 1989 but I think prior to the Barcelona sessions, Freddie got together with his friends Mike Moran and Peter Straker and just fooled around on the piano. Someone was recording it and it leaked.
The songs included are:
The Girl From Ipanemea
Written by: Vinícius de Moraes/Norman Gimbel
Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody
Written by: Jean Schwartz/Sam M. Lewis/Joe Young
and as the YouTube poster commented that summer feel good hit to be...
Fuck Off And Die You Fag
Written by: Freddie Mercury/Peter Straker/Mike Moran
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - vocals Peter Straker - vocals Mike Moran - piano
PERSONAL NOTES:
- Not something I've listened to more than once to be honest, but it's always nice to hear anything I hadn't heard from Freddie! Next up? Brian's miscellaneous collaborations of 1987

Brian made time for some work with friends in 1987 with varied results! I'm tending to group these things together as they aren't quite as important as full fledged Queen or solo tracks so you can take these or leave these as you see fit.
First up:
Meat Loaf - A Time For Heroes
Written by M. Scott Sotebeer, Jon Lyons and Rik Emmett.
Musicians:
Meat Loaf - vocals Brian May - guitar solo Bob Kulick – rhythm guitar Jon Lyons — bass, acoustic guitar, additional keyboards and synthesizers John Van Tongeren — piano, synthesizers Bill Boydstun – additional synthesizer programming Chuck Bürgi – drums Gina Ricci, Amy Goff, Elaine Goff – backing vocals
- The theme to the 1987 Special Olympics - It becomes commonplace for Brian to just come into a studio drop a guitar solo down on a song and leave. Brian does the guitar solo and that's it. - The solo starts around 3:15
PERSONAL NOTES: - The solo is great! The song is okay. The cause is brilliant.
Minako Honda - Golden Days
Written by Brian May
Musicians: Minako Honda - vocals Brian May - guitar (possibly keyboards and drum programming as well)
ALTERNATE RELEASED VERSIONS:
JAPANESE LYRICS VERSION
- NOT ESSENTIAL - Basically the same song sung in Japanese - there is some slight difference to the backing track but not a lot.
2006 REMIX
- ESSENTIAL - If you're going to listen, you should try this version as it is much cleaner and crisper. Brian did a good job on it - there may have been a few bits added by Brian as well.
PERSONAL NOTES: - I don't quite see what Brian sees in her, but she is capable and the song is nice. Not among Brian's best by any stretch but nice.
Crazy Nights
Written by Brian May
Musicians: Minako Honda - vocals Brian May - guitar (possibly keyboards and drum programming as well)
- Brian became good friends with Minako Honda and wrote these two tracks for her and performed on both. Minako later died of leukimia and Brian remixed this track for a tribute album. Brian long lamented that she deserved much better crossover success.
ALTERNATE RELEASED VERSION
JAPANESE LYRICS VERSION
- NOT ESSENTIAL - Basically the same song sung in Japanese - there is some slight difference to the backing track but not a lot.
PERSONAL NOTES: - The better of the two tracks imo but VERY 1980s. Very keyboard driven. But some nice guitar work from Brian.
Finally the last collaborations involved Bad News. If you remember from the 1986 live section, Brian became enamored with this comedy troupe to the point where he produced their album! Much like Anita Dobson later although this one will have less documented as Brian actually only performed on three tracks..but first I will document one that he didn't play on and you'll see why:
Bohemian Rhapsody
Written by: Freddie Mercury
Musicians:
Vim Fuego aka Alan Metcalfe (Adrian Edmondson) – Vocals and lead guitar Den Dennis (Nigel Planer) – Rhythm guitar Colin Grigson (Rik Mayall) – Bass guitar Spider Webb (Peter Richardson) – Drums
**NOTE - there are rumors that have never been confirmed or denied that John Deacon actually sings backing vocals**
- Hilarious. The video really makes it. Brian has stated that the band actually got good while recording the album so they actually had to try to play bad for the humor of it!
Bad News
Written by: Vim Fuego
Musicians:
Brian May - guitar Vim Fuego aka Alan Metcalfe (Adrian Edmondson) – Vocals and lead guitar Den Dennis (Nigel Planer) – Rhythm guitar Colin Grigson (Rik Mayall) – Bass guitar Spider Webb (Peter Richardson) – Drums
Life With Brian
Written by: Vim Fuego/Den Dennis/Colin Gregson/Spider Webb/Brian May
Musicians:
Brian May - guitar Vim Fuego aka Alan Metcalfe (Adrian Edmondson) – Vocals and lead guitar Den Dennis (Nigel Planer) – Rhythm guitar Colin Grigson (Rik Mayall) – Bass guitar Spider Webb (Peter Richardson) – Drums
- It starts off with a skit with the band squabbling over money and then goes into the song
Cashing In On Christmas
Written by: ?
Musicians:
Brian May - guitar Vim Fuego aka Alan Metcalfe (Adrian Edmondson) – Vocals and lead guitar Den Dennis (Nigel Planer) – Rhythm guitar Colin Grigson (Rik Mayall) – Bass guitar Spider Webb (Peter Richardson) – Drums
- The band decided their hand at a Christmas single! I don't believe it hit #1 :(
ALTERNATE VERSIONS
LET'S BANK IT MIX
- ESSENTIAL - Longer intro/outro and more Brian
DUB VERSION
- NOT ESSENTIAL - Same song with some more band arguments dubbed on top.
PERSONAL NOTES: - All the songs are funny but honestly I don't grab them to listen to...ever really. Once through...and then a few years later if I'm doing a Queen in order-thon I'll listen again.
Next up? 1987 LIVE! (hint...not much)
